Description A replica LeMat revolver I dressed up with some copper tubing, a pressure regulator thingy, and some holes.

When using this, I crammed some glowsticks down the lower barrel so that cool arcane light would glow from the holes. This didn't work very well, so I'm thinking of coming up with some sort of LED lighting to put in there.

This replica is a non firing prop manufactured by Denix.

A real LeMat is a French made percussion cap revolver that holds 9 .41 caliber rounds in its cylinder, and a shotgun round in the large underbarrel. The shotgun round is fired by flipping the striker on the hammer down to hit the lower firing pin. Pretty nifty for Civil War era technology.

really fancy. Just an idea: empty hulls + glowsticks?
Don't know if you see the bullet chambers when a leMat points in your face.
But IF, you could add a pretty nifty ghost bullet effect by puttin the glowsticks in there.

I tried that with mini glowsticks, because the full size ones would not fit. It didn't work all that well though.

mh, uncool :/ I guess a AAA battery won't fit in a 41 hull right? Otherwise you could build some underworld-ish ammo with LEDs...

That sh*t would glow like hell

I've considered LEDs, but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Very cool. The LeMat is a very unique firearm and lends itself well to this sort of fanciful interpretation.

This is, seriously, a very cool prop weapon and holster. I also like the idea of a fully-automatic revolver.

Since this is a percussion cap pistol, have you considered the creation of prop cartridges that load from the front of the cylinder? They could be a sort of steampunk version of a MiniΓ© ball, with a paper cartridge for the (sci-fi?) propellant.

Thank you. I may get around to doing a rifle with the spare Mosin Nagant stock I have. Though laziness and splitting time between six or so hobbies generally leaves that idea on the back burner.

If you like fully automatic revolvers, there is always the Mateba.

I never really planned on following up on anything accurate regarding prop ammo. I really just love the way the gun looks. If it used modern cartridges, I would so buy a real one, but I'm not a fan of black powder weaponry.

nice example of a LeMat shame its non-firing.....those bullets are .357magnums right cuz the lemat was both .36 and .44 caliber as well.......44 was mostly used by the Confederate calvary

Thanks. Yes, the bullets are .357 magnum. I just used them for atmosphere, since I don't have anything that fires .44.

Very cool! I'm attempting a similar project on a lemat revolver for this year's Halloween costume. Do you know what that pressure regulator thingy is? I'm trying to find something similar but not having luck. Also does that holster fit the revolver? I'm having a hard time finding a holster (with no flap) big enough to fit it. Thanks!

Airesyll In reply to ravenmir [2010-09-17 16:54:41 +0000 UTC]

I have no idea what the pressure regulator thing is actually. I found it on the ground years ago and finally found a use for it. You might try some random cylindral bits from Home Depot. Empty CO2 cylinders for a pellet gun would also work.

My gf made the holster for me, so I don't know what to tell you there. Definitely make the gun first, then start looking for how to mod a holster to fit it.

Home Depot is your friend for copper and brass bits; antique shops or ebay are good for broken clockwork.

Wonderful piece. I have two questions:

1. What did you use to cut and attach the copper

2. You mentioned adding LEDs. How would you do that?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Airesyll In reply to Treybacca [2010-07-07 15:21:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

Answers to the questions:
1. Hacksaw and JB Weld. Drilled holes in the gun frame to slide the copper into as well.

2. Not sure yet, but probably a cyclinder with the lights and battery(s). Slide tha down the barrel and use a screw or something to keep it from falling out.

Awesome thanks! Not to be to pushy, but do you know of any resources I could check out to learn some DIY custom light stuff of my own? I've never experimented with LEDs before, but would love to get a 101 course.

I love this picture. You did a great job.

The look is great, the copper and air valve look great. But I am a stickler for details and the one that stands out is the ammo. The ammo shown is a cartridge but the gun is a cap loader. I am not trying to offend or ridicule your work. You made a magnificent piece of art. It’s just the ammo is out of place. Something that was added that took away something in my opinion.

Keep up the good work.

Airesyll In reply to KevinGreenandanumber [2010-05-28 03:49:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

I know it is the wrong type of ammo; it is the wrong caliber too. I just tossed it and the holster into the picture to make it more interesting than the gun sitting there.

Incredible! Looks amazing, great work.

One correction though...It's American not French!

Dr. Jean Alexandre LeMat of New Orleans made this pistol in the late 1850s.

They came in numerous calibers.

Yours looks capable of being fully automatic!

The tube appears to port back gases to a filter that sends the compressed gas to work the hammer in full auto. Like a modern machine gun.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Airesyll In reply to vonmeer [2010-04-08 18:51:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

Fair enough. Seeing as the 1850s would be half a century past the Louisiana Purchase, that would certainly qualify as American.

Your reasoning for the gun being automatic is what I was speculating about in consideration of it being more than a prop. Since there is an automatic revolver (Mateba), it is within the retro sci-fi realm of possibility.

Kurvos [2010-03-17 20:57:12 +0000 UTC]

So you make fun of a revolver by adding on useless details not even appealing for the eye, and just making it overall less practical? I got to admit, I fail to get the point of that.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Airesyll In reply to Kurvos [2010-03-19 03:42:34 +0000 UTC]

If it were a real revolver, I would agree with you and not have done such a thing. Since it is just an inert prop, the useless additions change the aesthetic and have no effect on the gun's functionality, or lack thereof in this case.

It is very much the same sort of idea as the prop guns for Star Wars. For example, Han Solo's broomhandle Mauser pistol has two scopes and a bunch of other exterior kit that only serves to make it look different from the original piece.

Just search the manufacturer (Denix Replicas) and you should find some stores. The name of the store I bought it from may be called Civil War Replicas, but I don't remember anymore.

Glad you like it.
