It has a lot of problems and can never replace all the aircraft it is suppose to, the A-10 comes to mind first but we are losing capability across the board from what I see. not to mention they are incredibly expensive.

I follow a few aviation blogs and forums and from what I gather the F-35 is severely underrated. The A-10 still has a role to play in permissive environments, and I personally love it, but it hasn't been the the be-all and end-all of CAS since precision guided munitions arrived. In a world where the B-1 and B-52 can do CAS with PGMs, I'm sure the F-35 with it's amazing sensor fusion will be fine. There's no A-10 pilot out there who can see through the floor of his cockpit.
The cost of the F-35 is not as bad as people think. I think the price is down to 85 million, which is about what a new build 4th generation fighter that can't even fight an F-35 costs.
My guess is that a large portion of America's real airpower is in the black world. I'd guess that our force of F-117's in the first Gulf War was roughly equivalent in power to all of Germany's Tornados. Maybe more, I doubt if any Tornados could have made it through the flak over Baghdad. You've got to ask yourself what is really out there. If you see missing capability it may be because the role is filled by secret aircraft you haven't heard of.
