I like the variations in color and reflectivity of the panels.

The F-22 isn't VTOL capable.

That's not what I meant. I know it can't take off like the F-35B, AV-8, or Yak-141. I was talking about this kind of take off www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCEMg7β¦ ,and if there is a name for that kind of take off please tell me.

There's no special name for it, though it's often referred to as a tail-stand. It involves the aircraft taking off normally, gaining some altitude (usually a few metres) and then pulling into a steep, almost vertical climb. This maneuver is rarely used, as Β it doesn't offer the best time-to-altitude, and is thus reserved mostly for airshows and flight demonstrations. The English Electric Lightning was among the first aircraft with enough thrust to perform this maneuver, and is very famous for it. Nowadays, almost all fighter aircraft can do this maneuver with ease, so the F-22's ability to do it is nothing special.

I know it isn't special and that it is not used for anything outside of airshows (with most fighters the extra weapons and fuel load slow down quite quickly). But when I saw it at a airshow (this was also my first live airshow) it did a take off better than any F-22A take off I have seen before (the ones on Youtube usually only last for a few seconds or less, this one was 25 seconds of going vertical). I don't know much about the F-22A, as I am surprisingly more interested in the F-35s.

Fantastic!
I don't understand why they binned this plane. Do you know why?

But it's in service, so I don't know what you're talking about.

I understood it had been withdrawn and replaced by the F-35. Jane's Defence was on about it for months. Seems they got it wrong.

The F-35 is more geared towards the multi-role mode, while the F-22 is almost a pure fighter. Although, the F-35's capabilities are still not enough to convince me, given that existing aircraft like the Strike Eagle and A-10 do the ground attack job a lot better.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure I saw a bulletin to the effect the F-22 was being withdrawn from service. Glad it isn't, it seems like a fantastic plane.

I think it's a bit of a waste, but then, what do I know?

Too expensive, not enough results. The F-35 will likely meet the same fate

Kind of sad, that. If the F-35 goes the same way, what's next?

We're going to have to wait and see.Β
I'm not convinced the F-35 will be a decent plane for our Air Force (Netherlands)...
The Dutch government payed (or is going to pay) 4,3 billion euros for 37 planes...that's just too expensive. Let's hope it's going to be a worthwhile investment

Indeed. It's incredible how expensive these items have become!

What a sensual plane.Β The Air Force really should put the Decepticon logo on the show plane.Β

Wonderful shot of a great new plane.
Much better fighter than the F35 which had it but whopped in a dog fight test flight with a fully loaded F-16.

I don't know.Β The F-35 is to much like the F-111 or the F-4.Β Good for ground attack, but you pray that real fighter/interceptor don't find you and get you in a dog fight.Β You pray because your envelop just sucks when it comes to a real dog fighter.
Sadly, I think that the yanks forgot the lessons of the cold war and Vietnam.Β They are once again becoming to dependent of missiles and now stealth.Β They don't mean anything if a far more movable turns inside you and gets a lock with his missiles or worse, his auto-cannon.Β The whole reason the F15 and F16 came about is because MiG 17 Fresco jets would pop up and nail the F111's and F4's.Β It got worse for the yanks in the air with the MiG 21 Fishbed.Β
It maybe early in the game for the F-35, but I would say they depend too much on stealth like the Vietnam era jets depended on speed.
