Well now I stumbled across your gallery once again! For some reason I don't rightly recall seeing this work from you before, so I'm only assuming it's new to my eyes, hehe.
Since you're asking for advanced critique on the comments I might as well say my two cents worth, if it's really worth anything at all. :z
And I understand that I'm commenting on a piece that was submitted a few months back, forgive me for being so late in seeing this! xD
The only thing that jumps out at me immediately in need of correcting is the dragon's left foot. The middle phalange (toe) is the same length as the others, if not a hair shorter it appears. Normally in nature, the middle phalange is the longest as seen in most theropod dinosaurs, where as the first phalange closest to the inner thigh is the longest for birds of prey. Simply elongating any of the toes would correct the aesthetic problem, but if that is a characteristic of this dragon then by all means correct me!
The lighting is rather good, though I'd advise on erasing the darker lines bordering around the cones of light. Nyes trees are good... Hm.. The leaf matter adds depth, but all of the leaves in the foreground seem to have the same dark border. Varying opacity and blending would probably do well to touch that up... I'm probably just confusing you, since it's hard to describe what I mean! x_X I'm confusing myself even.
Uhm, I hope I helped in the least, maybe even for future projects(?). I guess I mean to say I hope you found my ramblings useful!

constructive criticism is always wealcomed...
I totally agree about the toes on his hindfoot... for future projects I will try to be more carefull on that...
ANd I'm still working on the leaves... this was only my first atempt...
THe borderlines on the cones of light weren't sapposed to be there, but I guess I missed a few...
ANyways, thanks for stoping by... and for the comment...

woods?!?
At first I thought it was a complicated thing to add so much detaill like leaves on trees or on the ground... but when a goodwilling artist was kaind enough to open my eyes to how it was actually done... I remained stunned to how little skill is invoulved in drawing such efects... I'm not gona say it's easy or simple... but it requires a heck of a lot less care and atentione than a persone's face would...

I would love to hear more about how it is actually done! I have always just concentrated my practice on the subject floating in white space on a page, because I have no clue to how to do backgrounds decently! If I do try them, they just seem to detract from the main object by being so much poorer in skill, or I go crazy trying to figure out how to execute all the details that I see others putting into their backgrounds! There must be some way of showing some detail, and using that to suggest the rest?? I just have not figured out how to approach it yet! But I am starting to do a bit more experimenting with it--so if you have any tips you could pass along, I'd love to try them!
This is so beautiful in the spirit of it as well as the drawing of it, IMHO! The handling of the dragon's form is so sensitive that I can just imagine how comfy a pillow/mattress he must make, and warm too, I bet! And as I say, the light coming through the trees and leaves makes this a truly peaceful scene!
I will look forward to seeing more from you--I have you on watch now! And you are motivating me to get going on my own practicing again--so thank you! I had gotten a little overwhelmed by all the beautiful things like this that I was finding here, lol! But if someone who can draw like this still feels like he's "just practicing", then I guess I better stop feeling sorry for "poor skills and results" and get to work, too, eh?! ~.^
Thanks for letting me know about your site in our game--this is Miashi, the little green dragon there.

well, by what I hear, you seem to be aiming to high to early with your backgrounds...
THe first and most important lesson we were thought in the very breaf architecture course I took ( B4 going through computer science ) is that spacing is very important... but you NEVER start doing an overly detailled background... the main idea is to have a phocal point ( what ever character or onject is in the foreground ) and the background should only suggest the fact that that object is sitting on something, and possibly show dimensions by giving something to compare the object to... like trees, cars, buildings and so on.
FOr starters, I would suggest starting very simple... just begin adding in the horizon ( irony isn't it? ) line. The horizon line determines from what angle you look at an object at. Unfortunatelly this is a bit more difficult to explain in words... so, if you have any drawings in the works, feal free to upload them and I'll give you a step by step critick, and help you through the different stages. I certantly hope you have a scanner handy though.
ANyways, after you will be comfortable with the horizon line, yo ucan start to slowly add in some detaills... at first just some outlines of other things in the distance... trees, hills, buildings and so on... but remember to keep it simple, so that the characters don't get "lost"... I had that problem too, when the characters did not stand out from the background...
Then, when you are comfortable with creating these scenes... you can move on to simple shading and shadowing... wich invoulves selecting a light source and sticking to it... again, it's a bit difficult to explain, but if you share your works in progress, I'll be happy to lend what ever knowledge I have on the sunject.
ANd only after you are comfortable with all of the above, do you start adding in textures... at least, that'sthe way I see it... differnet artists will have totally different aproaches, but this is my view.
P.S.
what dose IMHO mean?

Fayrith In reply to ajder [2007-11-20 07:43:05 +0000 UTC]
IMHO = in my humble opinion
And thanks for being willing to help me with this. That's awesome! I don't exactly have something in progress--well, I have an idea of a scene I'd like to do for a friend and myself--maybe I can put the one sketch of a part of it that I've tried so far into my scraps for you to see and comment/critique.
I'm a very amateur, hobbyist artist, with not enough talent or instruction to ever really be good, but I can't give it up either, LOL. And now, with having developed a right hand and body shakiness from Parkinson's Disease, I have an added challenge, as of course I am right-handed! ;/ I'll have to submit a drawing I did as an experiment to see what would happen if I "used" that shakiness as part of the drawing technique--it came out kind of interesting. The sketch I mentioned is also done since developing the PD.
I would be very interested in your ideas on starting with simple steps and then learning to build more into a background. That seems quite reasonable. I'd like to continue with you some more about this. I'll try to get some stuff submitted in a couple of days, ok? Oh and I do indeed have a scanner.
See you ingame or here again, I hope.

effort... I could hardly call it an effort...
you better save it quick cause I'm taking it down the moment you do... I hardly feal like this is quality work in the least... I'm not good in making tutorials...
The only REAL secret is to draw up the contour of the tree... and then you can think of the leaf texture as a pile of spagety ( or a long, tangled piece of thread )... you start one point and just do swirls... personally I do something like &&&&&&&&& but conected... you overlap each row slightly over the one above... and if it's small enough, you get the ilusion I got in my pics...
The most important aspect of this is... NOT to think about what you are doing... just let your hand go as it pleases... just focus on making the swirls of equal diametre... their angle and direction should be as hazardous as you possibly can get them... thinking about how you do each stroke is a sure guarantee for desaster... take it from somebody who knows...
so here's the doodle... but don't expect something great...
