Description This drawing has been completed with the help of Tony Orzech ( [link] ) wich I thank for the great amount of time he invested in helping me with the shading and texturing and Kylee Nell ( [link] ) wich I thank for her asistance with the anatomy... Thanks guys... I never could have done without you...

As for the story... Jon ( the elf ) just finished some really tough survival exercices as he is in training for admition in the elven guild of the riders... and Draghi ( the dragon ) just returned from a sucesfull but exhausting hunt...

So they bolth seattle down for a little rest... that's all there is to it...

Heck... I would like a pillow like that...

what should I say... probably the same stuff as usually: "omg, gorgeous, brilliant...
*stares in awe so intently that he loses consciousness*
*regains consciousness, continues admiring*
...
to add some little bits of a constructive criticism here and there... I thing the slope iin the pic is not an issue, I looks rather natural. but what I find rather ... strange ... is the posture of the dragon. I have been planning to draw a picture of a warior, the dragon rider having a rest together with hihs companion and I have been thinking about the right posture for quite a long time. what I came out with was this kind of posture, the one that would be "natural" even for the supernatural beeings like dragons.
[link]
or this
[link]
and with the person in the middle of this "circle", probably with the back against the leg of the dragon.
so, back to your pic, I think that this posture is rather unnatural, and would suit a human, but even though for only a short time. It is simply unnatural.
the other thing I found and that could be a bit improved is the ground... perhaps a little less leaves and more stones, patches of grass ... simply somewhat more diverse.
I really like the light element, I love to see rays of light used in the works. What I also love is the "mimics" of the dragon, so sleepy and natural... really perfect.
on the digital art issue, I think you should definitely switch to digital media, your art would look so much better... e.g. I love this dragon [link]

quite an extensive bit of critick... thanks... indeed... the posture might not have been the most well chosen one... but I already did something similar to what you suggested... in my "autumn studies" pic... it would have fealt like redoing that pic all over again but with a different subject... I was mainly trying to explore some new positions for my dragon... and I really wanted this kaind of "hug" efect... none of the positions you suggested can offer that... I realise it might not be the most comfortable position though...

As for the ground... this is deep forest... there's no grass in forests... at least not in any that i have been in... there was on the other hand a layer of leaves at least 5 CM thick... aside from fallen logs and branches you can't see much of anything... except if the slope is really abrupt... or if there's a river or a well trotten path...

And beynd ALL that... I did use a photo referance for the background... and the groudn was entierly covered in leaves... so I disagree with you there... the leaf cover was intentional and it suits the pic as best it can...

Next... the light... it's my first experminet with such light efects... hopefully in future drawings I wil be able to perfect that efect... allong with a rain aefect ( wich I really would like to learn ) and maybe fog... but one thing at a time...

As for digital media... I will not denny that nice efects can be obtained through it... but digital media isn't for me... one that I do not have access to the necesary softwere or hardwere in order to use it properly... and second... it would be like starting all over again learning to use such a medium... I'm quite happy with traditional media... and since there's nobody pushing me from behind on what I should use... I'm just fine as is...

As for that dragon... yes... rinpoo-chuang's work... very nice... I had that one faved for a long time now... and here's an example of ne of my favorite traditional media dragons:

omg, the link you posted... amazing.
I will not deny that traditional media are what suits you the best. It is what you love to work with, I suppose. It is same with me. But as I see it, it is as a different/higher level of work with art. In my opinion it is more "artistic"... how can I say it... it enables the artist to put his soul and his fantasy into the piece even more.
The only parallel I can think of is when I started to study photoshop. To make a selection, I used the lasso. But as the author said, If you want to make even more complex and more comlicated works, you will need a different tool. That is what I mean. A mere change of tools. You may see it differently and that is perfectly alright. It is how I see it.
Aaand, back to your work, to react to what you said about the leaves on the ground, the forest may be very thick, but the thicker the forest, the more twigs and branches have fallen on the ground. this is how I imagine it.
[link]
and
[link]
You were right about the grass, it might not be suitable, but at least a few logs and branches that would be visible on the first glance. Again, my opinion, you probably see it differently. That is what these comments are about, right, sharing opinions.
I should say why I comment so much here, I hope it doesnt annoy you too much. The reason is that a few years I fell in love with fantasy and esp. with dragons. After seeing them in games and reading about them in literature, I created my own world in my imagination. Chcek my gallery to see what I mean. The world, the stories and myths. Dragons are at the centre - well, not so original, I know.
Please, do continue with making pictures of dragons, with whatever media you wish. I just love it.

That link... that work belongs to an artist I once new from elfwood... and artist wich no longer resides there ( he took his work off of elfwood and I was not able to find it again... )
His name is Bradley W. Hicks... thankfully though I still have several of his works saved on my computer... a pitty he took all his stuff down... he was very talented and skilled.

this is the pic I used as referance:

[link]

though with the different elements shifted around a bit...

and no no... your comments are very much apreciated... it's very rare that I get long comments... and I just love discussing anything that is related to dragons... so keep them comming...

I had a look at your gallery... but did not find any drago nart...

But I like the story of your map though... and the Longest Journey was a fav game of mine... it was rather nice... and imaginative...

And I read LOTR as well... unfortunatelly it was a crappy translated vertione that had the entire section of alphabets taken out... there was nothing to it but the actual novel... oh well...

what a pity the artist you mentioned is no longer to be found there. I was once an "elfwood-dweller" myself, but that was long time ago. Now I have decided for deviant art.
About the length of the comments... personally I dont like comments to be too short, usually 2 words or so, because it gives me actually no feedback on the picture, just the general opinion of the spectator.
About those leaves in your pic, your reference image is very nice, though the different colours of leaves make it more interesting than if it would be in grayscale. I just like a bit of variation and detail even on the (back)ground.
I think I have nothing to say on this pic more,
I will be pleased to see more of your work, esp. new. Regards.

After having conversed with you for so long in the "Art You Just Don't Get" thread, I HAD to look at your work! It's absolutely wonderful! I'm amazed at your skill with the pencil and that is actually one of my personal tests of a good artist - anyone who can use a pencil well is definitely my idea of a good artist!

Excellent subject, well drawn and there isn't a thing about this drawing that doesn't catch the eye! Nice work, Ajder!

ajder In reply to Decarabia69 [2007-06-27 18:04:55 +0000 UTC]

huh... some people might say that the fact that everything catches the eye is something wrong... as you can't concentrate on it... not beying a focal point and all that... still this pic turned out better then most of my other works thanks to the help I resived from the people mentionedi n the description...

I'm personally working on a new picture now... invoulving the same dragon chasing down a deer... and I'm using a small clip of a ceetah chasing an impala as referance... would that be cathegorised as copying???

Anyways... thank you very much for stoping by and for your nice comments... they are very much apreciated...

Pencills are the only medium I can work with... I tryed my hand at paints... and colored pencills... and ink... but none yealded any resoults... so I just stick to plain old pencills... I am a bit uneasy about the idea to go digital... and I doubt I will ever do that... traditional art is my thing...

Some people ALWAYS have something to say, and most of the time it's not at all helpful. I think you've done a wonderful job, and I like having more than one focal point in a drawing. That's what makes me want to stare at a work of art for a long period of time.

I don't think it's copying if you use a photo of a Cheetah chasing down a deer as a reference. I hope to see that drawing when you finish (I've put a watch on you) as I'm sure it will be top notch work!

I've known artists who work ONLY in pencil. Don't even let anyone tell you that it's a beginner's medium. Jean Michel Basquiat (the guy we talked about in the "Art You Don't Get" thread) could NEVER have done what you do in pencil. He just didn't have the talent OR the creativity!

huh... it's not even a photo that I was uisying... it's a really crappy and pixelised video from wich I paused at the apropiate time... and took a screen capture of the screen... rudimentary... but I only needed the poses... not the detaills... I almost hwent sick trying to find an apropiate scene like that on the net... spent three days searching like a madman... with no success... the scene I'm trying for is a bit more difficult to obtain simply because it hasthe two animals runing partially towards the camera... most such flicks either has them runing paralel or away from the camera...

So far I sketched the dragon, and he ended up rather well, mimicking the cheeta's pose... it's the deer/impala that I am more concerned with... as it's prooving to be rather difficult to do... thys beying the first time I'm drawing something like that...

oh... and about that Basquiat guy... well... he didn't need to learn pencills... would you learn advanced computer programming if people payed you a bundle just to work in mspaint??? I personally wuldn't unless I were really intrigued by the subject... it's all about comodity... why bother doing something more complex and difficult if you are getting rewarded handsomelly for doing something a heck of a lot more ismple... that's my opinion on the subject...

well... I'm preatty confident that there are people in such situations... the consumer market is quite a ruthless thing when it comes to what the buyer wants... it's a sad realisation that artists need to do what other people dictate that they should do in stead of doing what they like most ( if they are hoping to earn an honest buck... )

Yes, it's a sad situation and I'm glad I don't have to resort to it myself. Art become work when you're painting what you need to in order to survive.

I personally don't understand how you see the dragon lying flat... as I have been very carefull to position him properly in on the background... as such he is aligned to the landskape...

take in to acount that the ground he is lying on IS flat as in it has no denivelations... it is just sloped downwards...

anyways... thanks for stoping by...

teigh In reply to ajder [2007-06-26 20:44:26 +0000 UTC]

I wrote my last note wrong and I'm sorry.
Meant to say, the ground slopes diagonaly down from left to right, giving the impresion that they are on a slight slope. Therefore Draghi's shoulders should be lower than his legs.

Please don't get me wrong. I think that this picture is great! It was just one of the things that struck me when I looked at it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ajder In reply to teigh [2007-06-27 04:29:13 +0000 UTC]

I understand what you are saying... but the dragon's shoulder IS in fact lower then his legs...

almost 1.5 Cm to be exact...

Maybe it is that you are comparing his front paw shoulders to his legs... wich is in fact wrong... it's his wing shoulders that are closest to the ground...

I'm sorry... but the dragon is properly aligned to the slope... maybe I wasan't skilled enough to make that come through properly... but technically... it's corect... and I was carefull to make it so...
