Description not much to say about this one... it was an atempt in to painting a different kaind of enviroment then my usual forests and grasslands... So I whent for an arrid landscape... inspired from a painting from a dinosaur encyclopedia...

As for the story... just the main characters of my story engaging in a little race across the arrid fields of the Burning Wastes ( an island that long ago was part of the main continent and home to a large elven temple complex... that was of course at the time of the High Elves... but over thousands of years the chunk of land broke off from the mainland and drifted towards the Southwest... the change in climate destroyed the lush vegetation present on this land... on the mainland the area wher this land once stood is now knon as the Shellian cove ).

Jon and his dragon Draghi are currently in the lead... and have been so from the beginning of the race... and yet in the end they will loose on the final hundread meters to their competitores... Amelya Pinefrost and her dragoness mount.

I love all the scenery here and action! It's a really great piece!

To make it even better, I suggest adding atmosphere. Imagine if there is sand int he wasteland they're running through, which makes that which is farther away appear to fade into the color of the background (like, the plateaus that are near the back would be fading into blue.) Additionally, you could sharpen the nearest dragon and rider a little, and it would make them feel even more in the foreground, adding to the feel of action.

This is really great, though. Love all the details.

why thank you for the critique it's very much apracitated... however it's unlikelly I will be touching up on these... it has been some time since I considered this piece finished...

But I will keep your advicei n mynd for future pics... they are quite good.

Thanks again for stopping by.

Actually, every time I give a critique, I never expect the person to jump in and fix THAT piece. I like them to take the critique and think how to push it into future artworks, as eventually, you'll have something similar !

... mostly because I do that, too! If I took the time to re-do everything of mine that could use it, I'd never finish anything new!!

I'm very happy you understand. Belive me I'm tempted to go in and fix them... but to be honest I usually spend so long on these paintings that by the time i consider them finished I am utherly sick of them and just opening them again in photoshop causes a minore migrene... I couldn't really bear to open it again and do anything on it.

I like the background a lot!
The paws prints are great

Maybe one thing is disturbing me in this picture - these rocks far away seem to be maybe a little too regular

yeah well, first time atempting to paint that kind of enviroment... I tryed to keep it irregular... kind of failled.

Well it came out fantastic... I have the same problem about finishing things, but I consider everything I do to be practice, even if I do something time consuming with a lot of detail. So I guess it doesn't bother me too much if it's not as great finished as it was in my imagination, because it was just practice after all.

Very nice job on the environment, especially the stark lighting, it gives it just the right feel... it looks like a warm morning just before the full heat of the day starts to kick in...

thanks... used referance for the background... wanted to try and do a different enviroment then the clasic forest and trees and grass i have in almost all my pictures.

and I guess I just can't help thinking that pics don't turn out the way i imagined them...

ah, it's finally uploaded! Congrats, as a whole, it's a lovely piece with an interesting story. Why does Draghi lose exactly?

well, lets get some niggles out of the way first. The anatomy of the elf is still a bit off. But that's fine, as he isn't the focus and I know that you battle with humanoids. I remember we had a discussion about the paw prints, and I still don't know if I felt comfortable with their placements... but maybe that's just taste.

There is a strange shadow in front of Pinefrost and her mount. Its form seems to suggest a ditch or a drop that they are both about to bound into. Is it just wet sand from the river?

I would have liked to have seen heavier texture on the forground sand, as the sand has the same level of detail as the background mountains. This would have given more depth and perspective. you have the most amazing detail on the reeds, but then there is nothing on the actual ground. And maybe a little more interaction between the sand and the paws hitting it?

Just watch the sand dunes on the mountains and the bits of rock protruding from it, seems a littls pasted.

But I love your actual mountains, you got the colour right for the aerial perspective we often talk about. the shadows are great too, nice colour choices. (you didn't just use the burn tool right)

And stunning texture on the main dragon itself, I noticed it first on the dragons chest. I LOVE that! I really admire your drawing ability on the dragon characters.

Wow, a long critique, and its 1 in the morning here... maybe that is the time I actually have my thinking cap on...

Well done hun! I'm glad its finished and its a great rendering! It's really fun, lots of spirit and an interesting angle.

yea... I just wanted to finish it already because it was beginning to get on my nerves...

I do remember you pointing out the elf's poor position but I just didn't feal like changing him... laisy...

the shadow in front of the background dragoness ( wich I have yet to come up with a name for ) is indeed a sort of ditch... the lake shore is somewhat higher then the waterlevel and it certain spots it lowers to the watersurface... that shadowy area i s such a place it's like a semicircle... I tryed to depict that with shadows... and well I would think they are gona leap straight over it givven their position and speed...

texture on the ground... yea I probably should have... but fact was that I have so few damn textures in my photoshop that I would haveended up using the exact same texture on the ground as on the dragon and I thought that would have looked REALLY off... so I just decided to try my luck with no ground overlay texture.

yea... more dirt beying displaced by their paws probably would have made it mroe dynamic... laysiness again...

I only used the dodge and burn tools for shading... and a small amount of colores overlayed via a colore layer... just to get the oposite lighting... you know... orange sunlight = blue ambient light... I'm trying to understand how to use those secondary lightsources...

anyways thanks indeed for the critick... it's much apreciated... I would have liked if I had been able to touchup on all those points... but I just couldn't suffer the painting a moment more...

Yes, I understand what you mean. I'm currently trying to make a big digital image myself... one of the most complex drawing I've ever made. And I'm stunned how much time it takes me to draw it. I really don't understand how all those speed-painters are able to draw so quick...
