Hook is one of my favorite movies EVER. I think you needed to be around 10 or 12 years old to really appreciate it when it first came out; the critics hated it, but who the hell cares what they thought? Hook gave us Dustin Hoffman in his greatest role ever. Yes, greater than Rain Man. I’ve been thinking about (and watching) Hook a lot lately, because we’ve lost two of it’s principal actors this year: first Bob Hoskins, who played Mr. Smee, and then Robin Williams, who played Peter Pan.
This strip is mostly a recreation of one of my favorite scenes from that movie (although any of the scenes with Captain Hook are my favorites, really). So we’ve got Apsara as Captain Hook and Winslow as Mr. Smee, while Ben is standing in for Peter Pan and Quentin and Kurt are standing in as Jack and Maggie. This was a huge pain in the ass to draw. The Captain Hook costume is incredibly elaborate, and I haven’t done it justice by half. And that cargo net was crazy detailed, too. Whew!

Hook was one of those fascinating movies that really took a firm hold on its generation, but wasn't received well critically AT ALL. And it certainly hasn't entered the public canon of 'must watch' movies. I liked it, though. I was a bit old for it when it came out, but I still thought it was fun. And I'd have to agree with you on the Dustin Hoffman case, though I haven't seen Midnight Cowboy, which I understand is REALLY Hoffman's finest hour.

Yeah, critics HATED it. But everyone my age that saw it when it came out has a much more positive view about the movie. I think that's the case for a lot of Robin Williams' movies from the late 80s, early 90s. Critics were not kind to his more family-oriented films at the time, but I loved every one of them.
Dustin Hoffman-as-Hook's description of parenthood has been a formative part of my own parenthood experience.

Well, I think you're onto something. Robin Williams movies in general got a rather rough reception for a long time from critics, though I didn't mind lots of the movies that got raked over the coals. Heck, I liked Bicentennial Man! I liked it! I'm the guy who dislikes the ones other people like! CAN'T STAND Dead Poet's Society.

Any party with Winslow almost immediately enters crazy territory. Probably why he hasn't gone to many parties recently.
And Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook is one of the greatest feats of acting ever.

Love this!! I have successfully gotten my kids (7 & 8) both HOOKed! In fact, my daughter fell in the floor and laid there, then sat up and yelled, ''CLAP PETER!'. I about fell out laughing, and I clapped, of course.

That's why they call the movie "Hook" and not "Old Man Pan and His Family." Dustin Hoffman is so good in that movie it's scary.
