Bio

To say Jonamac has issues would be putting it lightly. Bitter and pessimisitc, he rarely every says or does anything positive with sincerity. He's self-serving, arrogant, and generally an unpleasant guy with whom to interact. Being a son of the Element of Honesty did very little in preventing his becoming somewhat of a pathological liar. He lies often, mainly when it benefits himself, and is not above petty crimes here and there when the urge strikes him.

Jon, of course, works hard to never let any of this be obvious. He's very good at behaving properly when the right people are around, and has picked up a knack for manipulating situations to make himself look better. He puts on an air of sophistication and diligence to mask his mooching tendencies and rather hedonistic way of life. For all his posturing about his "refined ascetic" lifestyle and how money cannot buy happiness or true beauty, he's very partial to the finer things in life and is ultimately devoted to his way of keeping himself comfortable (i.e., not working a stable job, painting half-assedly when he feels like painting at all, and huffing about he's unappreciated in his time).

Jon's quite educated on the history and interpretations of art, and he knows it. He spends a lot of time at galleries, giving full-blown lectures on this painting or that sculpture and generally lording his knowledge over the uncultured swine who don't really appreciate art. This isn't entirely just him being an art snob, however; he genuinely loves art, what it can do, and what it can mean, and could ramble about seemingly minor details or facts for hours. His arrogant explanations are really just him gushing once one peels away the holier-than-thou mannerisms. He gets very uncomfortable very quickly whenever people notice this and goes to great pains to hide it and other such "weaknesses".

Despite being a rather talented artist when he's passionate about an idea and works hard on a piece he's truly happy with, Jon is often careless and produces whatever will appeal to whoever commissioned him with the bare minimum effort. Deep down, he is disgusted by how lazy he's become with art and how thoughtless so many of his projects are, but he likes ignoring this niggling at the back of his mind in favor of his avoidance of any negative experiences/emotions. He also doesn't realize how terrified he is of showing what he can really do when he actually cares. It's easier to coast on decent, barely-passable effort that's as inoffensive and broadly appealing as possible. Outside criticism of a piece with genuine effort and passion poured into it would likely deal serious damage to his already fragile ego.

Overall, while Jon comes off as a massive jerk (...and is one...), a lot of his unpleasant attitude belies insecurity, self-hatred, unhappiness and a dissastisfaction with life.

*Has a very bad relationship with his mom. Learning Applejack - the Element of Honesty and his childhood role model - had cheated on his biological father and hidden this from her family for years destroyed the idolized version of her he'd had all his life. AJ is very disappointed in her dishonest and lazy son, but can't help but worry about him incessantly and wish he would come home.

*After he found out the true parentage of his younger half-brother, Almanac, he ran away from home. He lived with Flam for a while, from whom he learned some manipulation and conman skills. He's spent the past ten years away from Ponyville, wandering around Equestria and doing the odd job to boost his finances. He only just recently returned to Ponyville, for reasons unknown, but has made a point of avoiding his family as best he can and Sweet Apple Acres altogether.

*He's the only member of his family to lack freckles, coat markings, and an apple-themed cutie mark. He takes these as a point of pride and likes to emphasize them, though a small part of himself buried deep within his soul has always been upset by this...

*Very much adverse to commitment. He never stays tied down romantically for long, and has left quite a few broken hearts in his wake. Those he dates are obstensibly his current muse, but are often just the current person willing to house and feed him. He claims he's happy with this situation - one permanent muse would just make him grow stale in his art, etc. etc. No one can picture him settling down (or pity the poor soul who would have to deal with him longer than a week).
