Description
I'm going overseas next Sunday so I'll be away and inactive for almost 2 months. I hope I can finish this drawing before I go..When I saw Ben Barnes in Prince Caspian role I thought he's hot but since I'm not a fan of the movie I didn't feel like drawing him. I was so thrilled to know he got the leading role in the movie 'The picture of Dorian Gray', one of my fav gothic novels! Thought I always picture Dorian Gray in the book to be a pretty boy with blond hair I don't mind this darker, hotter version of him!
Now to the drawing.. I use this [link] as the ref.
My WIP is always friggin ugly, that's why I've never posted any of them!! I don't know how to finish one part or one section of a drawing at a time. I always start with the whole face and my drawing never look decent until I'm close to the finish line.
However, people keep asking me how do I start my drawing and how I do the shading and it's so hard to explain with words. So there you go..
And don't worry if the drawing look messy at this stage because that's how all of my drawings looked when I started them.
You can take this as my shading tutorial, if you find it useful..that's it..
Any question please feel free to ask.

Oh my god I love Ben Barnes. I can't wait to see the film. I hear it even involves some man-on-man stuff (not expecting much, the killjoys).

This is sooooo helpful!! I am just starting to "draw" and be in the art world, and I've been wondering how exactly shading works with pencil. This has inspired me! I want to draw all day and just try all of these things out! Thank you, thank you, thank you! And have fun on your trip! I hope its amazing!

Wow! Thanks so much for sharing your technique. I'd love to work like that but I always end up doing the eyes, nose & mouth first then filling in the rest!

I've always been curious about your drawing process and I have to say I'm pretty surprised how messy it actually looks. Hard to believe that all those scribbles end up as a finely polished drawing in the end.
This is awesome. I love your little dot system.
Can't wait to see it finished!

LOL..This one is the less messy one to be honest. I know I'm gonna smudge every pencil stroke I make so I never try to make them look neat.

Wow that's great! I always have a feeling that my drawings look all messy on this stage, but it's good to know it's pretty normal for the others too.
But it's just kinda sad that you will leave for two months, I will miss your works and talking to you.

The shading and blending are often described in othe WIPs but the dot technique in getting the right proportion is something rarely described. Wish there was a measuring/dotting WIP Trade secret i guess

Not that secret really. Just do it like when you creat a line graph and use the border of the picture as axis X and Y.
Yeah I love Thai foods!

Sorry to hear about your work love. DA seriously need to work on keeping their rules consistent. It gets so ass backwards sometimes in terms of what they consider in violation. I'm sure you'll be allowed to post it again soon - just try not to get too mad and work civily with them through it. Best of luck!

ooh! thanks for showing us! This is going to help me alot on the picture of Hayden Christiansen I'm working on. But about blending tissues; I asked about them one time and I was told that they aren't that good to use. It makes things too "smudgy." Hmm But your pics always turn out good with them.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
akaLilith In reply to ForceChild [2009-09-11 13:18:18 +0000 UTC]
I think it depends on personal styles and preferences. I always smudge everything in sight so there's no such thing as too smudgy for me. Blending with tissues gives you the smoothest effect you can get but you need to be careful not to mess up any details in the process.

Not until next Sunday.. I have to work everyday next week.
I'm glad you're doing it this way too cos most WIPs I've seen they started working on one section and moved on to another. But because I do it this way my WIP never looks pretty..

MarcLeeT In reply to akaLilith [2009-09-11 13:20:29 +0000 UTC]
I tried just a small section at a time but seem to be better at building up the entire picture Gradually.
The other tutorials are great as well, only recently been able to get hair sort of life like recently but helped a lot.
I have the opposite problem of trying to find work right now.. until then I'll stick with drawing for a bit
