Description:
In his native world, Pathos is one of the oldest demons around and was given the title of “Greater Demon” after he escaped from hell when his master died, going on a search for a new one. But only someone far more powerful than himself would be sufficient enough to be called his owner, and in the meantime he became over-aggressive and mischievous.

It was during this period that he became known by the inhabitants of the planet as a vicious creature who attacked villages and caused significant damage and trouble wherever he went. No one in their world was powerful enough to contain or control Pathos; not even the kingdom’s Master Wizard could stop the hellhound’s work.

For this reason, it was Pathos whom was summoned by the Rune Master named Carrielle, a then 11-year-old blonde with a need for power. Carrielle explained to the demon that his parents were being held hostage by his king, and that if he did not deliver on his promise to kill the opposing queen and all her magicians that his parents would be killed.

Because Pathos can sense the thoughts and intentions of others, he knew Carrielle was an innocent and naive boy whom could easily be fooled or taken advantage of. He also knew that the so-called king the boy spoke of had already killed his parents.

The demon took a moment to go over his situation. He could agree to lend his power to the boy and in exchange could receive even more power later through the contract of receiving a spirit, but he’d have be contained within him for however long the child managed to survive. That could be a while—once possessed, Carrielle would become immortal.

There was also the fact that the parents were murdered already. This meant that Carrielle would do as he was asked and would kill a considerable amount of people, only to discover he’d been lied to, which would inevitably lead to him killing the King and his men. After experiencing that sort of distress, combined with the knowledge of losing his own soul, he’d probably have a breakdown and would go to a different world to seek escape.

How entertaining. But there was a way to make the game even better.

Pathos agreed to the contract but told Carrielle that he wouldn’t accept the boy’s soul in exchange, but required the soul of the person whom Carrielle was in love with. Now since he was a child, he’d yet to be in love, and Pathos risked the boy never falling in love and thus wouldn’t receive his prize. But he knew the torment it would cause the human would be plenty enough to make up for it, should he fail, and that humans were prone to falling in love. Chances were he’d get what he wanted, and would be entertained in the meantime.

Carrielle regrettably signed the contract, and Pathos possessed him. This successfully linked their souls, spirits, and bodies, and gave the human all of the demon’s powers and strengths.

Things played out exactly as he’d guessed; Carrielle carried Pathos with him from world to world in search of a way to right the wrongs he’d committed. All the while, the Rune Master (now a Black Mage) closed his heart and refused to allow any close relationships to form with others, determined to protect others by not caring. His heart began to harden itself to kindness and he became bitter and angry, gradually being affected by his self-hate and by the dark energy Pathos constantly bombarded his soul with. This affliction mutated Carrielle physically, and by the time he found a job working with a young Demon Lord named Kray, he’d lost his left eye to Pathos, and his left hand was clawed.

Pathos continued to ‘support’ Carrielle with his power. He remained shackled in the confinements of the Mage’s soul, waiting for the day he’d gain the soul of that ‘special person’.

Before this relationship, Pathos’ duties as a Greater Hellhound included: guarding the gates of Hell, and seeking out to harvest damned souls. The latter was his primary joy in life, sent to collect the spirits of humans that were condemned by either some form of horrible act (such as rape or murder) or by signing a contract with a demon that worked for a Greater Demon.

In order to fulfill his duties, Pathos was created with the ability to sense the sins of those he is around and can find anyone with a demonic seal placed upon their body. He has a talent for seeking out people and seems to enjoy the hunt. Anyone that is too easy to locate or doesn’t put up a fight bores Pathos considerably. These are the people he teases for weeks at a time, taunting them and finding amusement in the intensity of their fear before finishing his job.

Like other hellhounds, a burn left by Pathos’ flame becomes severely infected, often leading a slow and grueling death of any mortal that sustains such a wound. Immortals can recover from a hellhound’s burn, but the length of recovery makes it so that immortal won’t mess with the creatures a second time.

When he is not ‘owned’ by a master, Pathos is very aggressive and dominant. Anyone below his power is considered prey-worthy, becoming a food, power, or entertainment source. He is very mischievous and often plays tricks on people. He has no problem with taking advantage of the weaknesses or vulnerabilities of others (as illustrated by his behavior with Carrielle) and is selfish creature that seeks only to pleasure and to better himself. Pathos’ nature leads him to seek more and more power, ensuring his own survival and dominance.

But something changes when he is placed in a submissive role, either by a stronger demon/etc forcing him in his place, or by a contract with a more powerful master. When this happens, Pathos’ frustration and need to cause mayhem seems to be cut back, revealing a considerably more relaxed and playful creature that seeks to please his ‘master’.

Though still quite impish and aggressive towards others that he is not instructed by his owner to be ‘kind’ to, Pathos is an overall obedient creature. He can be trusted 100% to be loyal and is capable of performing anything from killing a mass quantity of people to something demeaning (like cleaning a dirty bathroom) and does either without complaint. He will do anything instructed by his master unless he or she becomes incapable of functioning above him, under which circumstances Pathos takes over the role of controller and reverts to his unruly state.

An example of this behavior can be seen with his interaction with Ark, a more powerful being that is similar to Pathos in energy and strength but beyond him in power and age. After a bout with the wolf, Pathos became immediately submissive and offered his services to Ark once he’d disconnected with Carrielle (whose body he was able to take over for a short time while they were in The Void).

After this initial takeover, Pathos was able to take his own form using the boy’s flesh on several occasions and got the chance to spend time talking with Ark at the mansion where he worked under a teenager named Liege. Pathos took to Liege quickly, desiring to steal the youth’s soul for himself (but this shouldn’t be confused with master-seeking behavior and is in fact his prey drive at work). He also found the Weapons that worked there to be fascinating, particularly Diamond, whom he followed around often.

Later in life, Pathos found himself in a strange situation. He’d separated himself from Carrielle, forcibly breaking the contract so he could fight Liege on-on-one in a battle over their souls. He lost the fight and was taken hostage. Liege carried the demon’s soul with him, using it on several occasions as an energy source for magic.

Once Liege had completed his mission and had settled down in a cottage, seeking a more passive life, he released Pathos and discovered the hellhound now referred to him as ‘Master’ and had completely submitted himself to the boy’s will. Liege decided to allow Pathos to remain and keeps him outside on a chain, allowing the Greater Demon to act as his guard dog.

Pathos often takes a dog-like form, appearing as a dark blue pinscher and becoming quite vicious with anyone he does not recognize. Because he can sense sin and intention, Pathos makes a good guard when Liege and Juul are away, and loyally protects Jireh and Auric.

He gets along very well with Auric and shows his gentle side with the child, acting like a nanny and a friend for the boy when Juul is away. The tolerance the demon shows for the child’s relentless tugs and demands is impressive; placed with anyone else’s child would have considerably different results.

Though passive and well-behaved with the right people, Pathos is still a demon and should not be trusted by anyone he views as easily preyed upon.
