It should be possible to do this without triangles or diagonal / edges

OH man, wish I'd seen this before I attempted (and failed) it on my own! Thanks for posting.

thankx for the tutorial
but in step 8 (creating polygons keys) do u mean edges when u said vertices?

You're very welcome ! And to answer your question, you can do it with edges as well. Basically all it means is scaling the edge in the direction which should be perpendicular to the edge itself. you can do it with verticies or edges, i just prefer verticies (call me olde school ). Basically it all boils down to personal preference. You'll find with that a lot with web tutorials its mostly left to interpretation :/.

Part of my favorites collection - I wonder whether your techniques could be used to make a keyboard for an alien race or for some futuristic science fiction (I almost used sci-fi, but I caught my self in time 8D) animation or movie.

THANKS XD (First ever tutorial, I was a bit nervous :s)
I'm not too sure, it kind of simplifies it and is easily open to modifiation, the only problem is that UV mapping might not be as simple after too many mods. But thanks again, I hope you put it to good use ^^
