Description So I'm slowly working on my overdue commissions. This time for Kazvachi who requested the Silmarillion character Haleth, daughter o Haldad, who led the Haladin after her father's death.

It was such a great pleasure to draw this character. I was quite Tolkien-obsessed as a teen, and, as you can imagine, had a particularly soft spot for Haleth, her being one of the only female warriors in Tolkien's writing.

Hope I did her justice Kazvachi !!

Lovely commission! I get a very clear sense of personality from her: both strong and fearsome  and quite reserved There are lots of details to her clothing without veering into the ornamental, which gives a very practical warrior kind of feel, like she’s been at this a long time. Overall an experienced warrior.

I also really like the way you did her hair, it looks very soft. The greyish tones are very restful on the eyes with a wonderful combination of warm and soft greys.

Thanks! I'm really happy to hear that. Yeah, I really wanted to make her look practical and down-to-earth. I think the hair is the only impractical thing about her look, but hey, artistic license!

Great portrait- loving the uses of grey both warm and cold tones to convey so much detail- plus that's a really empowering pose for Haleth

A wonderful depiction of Haleth. One of the better designs for sure!  Lovely inclusion of the hounds, and great palette as well. I'll probably have this artwork in mind when thinking of Haleth, daughter of Haldad, in the future.

Measured by his day and age, Tolkien had his fair share of strong women, and female warriors. Lúthien, Haleth, Eowyn and Lobelia Sackville-Baggins all stands out, although their number is slim by later generations' standards. I am certain he drew inspiration not least from the numerous assertive women found in the Norse sagas (although, true to form, he kept his own world and non-Orc characters purer, more honest and less backstabbing than a great many of those we find in real history, and in culture stories). Wonderful setting, full of memorable background characters one would have loved to know a lot more about.

Thanks so much!! That's a great compliment! I'm so glad you like my take on her!

I agree, if one thinks about it, Tolkien did have a couple of interesting female characters, apart from the ones you mentioned, who are all great, perhaps also Galadriel, Melian, and Elwing? To me also Arwen, in her literary version, was actually quite interesting. I mean, her choice was a difficult one and I think one needs a lot of bravery to make a choice like that. But overall their roles are minimal and very secondary to the male characters. A shame he didn't take it just a little bit further!

I love her hair! It's so dramatic and thick, it really adds to her strong figure and I also love that the armour looks functional! Those dogs are cute lol, like they're kind of messing around as dogs do when they're meant to be a bit serious

Ah, thank you! I really have a thing for bushy, curly hair. The armor is strongly inspired by lamellar armor worn during the late antique period. I think it looks quite good here. I'm actually really bad at designing original/fantasy armor...

Haha, I know what you mean. It's so hard to make your dogs look 'noble' longer than 5 seconds!

Amazing! I love he armour! The details on her hair and jewellery look amazing.
The dogs look really strange to me, but I may just not be familiar with that breed.
Nice work!

Thank you! I had a lot of fun drawing her. Well the dogs were supposed to have an Irish wolfhound/ Scottish deerhound look, but I had a hard time making them look right.

Whoops, should have seen that, sorry. The rest of it looks amazing, the background is really good too! Kind of like she's out on a rocky plain in Scotland or someplace colder.

She looks awesome in your style! I love her outfit and that determined expression! A great and very pleasant surprise to see a Tolkien character drawn by you ^^ He does have some awesome characters (to say nothing of the fabulous world-building) and his works influenced me a lot, my favourite character being Turin son of Hurin (of course, since I'm generally into dark and brooding characters xD I hope I'll get to draw him some time)

Ah, thank you!!! I'm so glad you like my interpretation of her.
Ooh really? I loved Turin tool! And the Children of Turin was one of my favorite Tolkien stories! (I liked tragedy as a teen - now I'm more into fluffy, happy stuff, lol). I'd love to see your take on him!!

Haha I'm more into bright stuff now than I was as a teen too ( especially when it comes to the colour of my clothes xD )

Yes, I have to depict Turin and Nienor some time!

Haha, well I don't know about you but I'm pretty glad my teenage angst time is over! Though I won't pretend I don't enjoy a good edgy tragedy from time to time! XD

Oooh, I'd love that!

HelevornArt In reply to akitku [2019-06-11 08:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Haha I second that! Tragedy and dark thing are still my cup of tea, but I'm not anymore ashamed to admit that once in a while I feel like dancing to Ricky Martin and wearing pink I've basically turned from Merwyn into Eyolf over the course of 13 years

Yes her appearance was pretty brief but really made an impression. I love many of Tolkien’s background characters - unimportant but so full of personality.

Azul-din [2019-06-06 19:58:19 +0000 UTC]

Now THAT is a warrior! And the wolfhounds were a nice touch, besides being excellently drawn.  Something about the background landscape manages to suggest  the endless Siberian Steppes

akitku In reply to Azul-din [2019-06-07 11:04:22 +0000 UTC]

Ah thank you!! The hounds were such a fun addition. Interesting what you say about Siberian steppe. I guess it makes sense, recently I've been drawing very lush backgrounds for the comic, forest and countryside. I felt I want to draw something more rugged and barren, and that fits Siberia very well indeed.

Ah of course not. Eowyn was pretty darn amazing! A shame she later decides to become a healer. I love healer characters, but I don’t think that fitted her at all...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NikosBoukouvalas In reply to akitku [2019-06-08 12:56:00 +0000 UTC]

I guess that's more in line with Tolkien's general philosophy. I can't think of many (if any) of his characters who love being warriors and wouldn't retire from the profession after the war was over. And a healer contrasts the warrior well and reflects Tolkien's views on warfare.

But yeah, I don't know if the healer's job would fit Eowyn. But I can't think of much else either :/
