Description I just got back from a very brief vacation and decided to post a recent picture of Theodosios from my tumblr. I missed drawing him. Isn't he the most sincere-eyed bureaucrat? Apologies for the sketchiness but I wanted to finish it quickly...(so busy). Recently I've mostly been doing digital art because it's just so much more convenient (less cleaning, easier to leave a picture and come back to it when I have time etc.) but I can't seem to stick with a style...each picture is different.

Thank you! No, it wouldn't have. This is MUCH earlier. It's supposed to be a statue on a column. But I didn't want to draw it too detailed so I guess the effect is it looks like a minaret.Β

Thanks for the info.Β  I'm so used to seeing Ag Sophia with the additions that it just sprang to mind.

I know what you mean! People even sometimes add the minarets in pictures that are supposedly taking place in Byzantine times. It was my mistake to rush the column and statue so. To my defense my digital art skills were still in the early phase then!

i love this, i think i have say something also on tumblr sorry if i am repeating myself, but i really like him and his expression, also his pose... but i think your digital/traditional work are very similar and i don't even need to open the deviation of the preview for recognize that it's your work, just for saying that your "style" and all that is unique about it is still there even if you change tools.Β

did you ever try painter tool sai? it's literally saving my life (i have recently decided to keep coloring my comic with it if i manage to emulate my traditional style) it emulate traditional tools (above all watercolors) and it's really easy to work with! Wow, it is so good to see Theodosios once again! I remember him from some of your previous drawings (such as the 'Reading lessons' and ;Happy kids are happy'. I think all of them are great but this one shows how your style in digital drawing developed. I really like this piece - the depth of coloours, their intensity, selection and shading are awesome here! Also I really Β like how you did his face and hands. He is so handsome! I know that hands are always one of the most difficult parts to draw but you did a very good job here. The byzantine church in the background is a lovely touch as is the Roman column - for a moment I thought this is a minaret but when I looked closer I saw the statue at the top - well done! I also think that his red cloak is very original, is this based on an actual historical example of how cloaks were worn? Knowing you I think it probably is, very interesting! it is a great work overall, thank you for sharing! It is always a pleasure to see your art!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! I really like drawing Theodosios and I think he is sometimes a bit of a test rat for me...To try new ways of drawing/painting etc. Poor guy.
I'm very happy you like the hands - I really tried hard to make them nice. Hands are so difficult. But if I improve I would be really proud. The cloak isn't original I think...just a stylised depiction. But I liked it.

Great sketch! I wish mine looked this good- you've really improved how you draw hands, these ones are beautifully drawn. I love his pose too- very saint like! I love the pearls sewn onto his tunic collar and cuffs and the background detail, as always, is delightful- especially the image of the Madonna behind him. (Great detail with the different eye colours too! )

I would hate to think you had abandoned watercolor, but your digital work improves apace. Especially the drapery/ clothing and the articulation of the hands in this one. I was trying to think what they reminded me of- and then it came to me: www.google.co.uk/search?q=hand… of course! . And thenΒ  I think you have certain stylistic elements that are your own, including a subtlety of expression that appears in all your figures. You really seem able to sum up a personality - and reading the other comments, I'd say successfully !

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akitku In reply to Azul-din [2016-08-25 12:27:28 +0000 UTC]

No, no, definitely not abandoning watercolour. I just turn to digital when I have less time or am less focused.
I'm glad you can see improvement! As for the hands, you are spot on of course. I'm not very good at drawing hands and I just love how hands look on renaissance pictures so I thought it would be good practice to try to copy from such a painting.

Glad to hear it!

As for the hands - of course, for a model to draw from you could hardly do better. It is interesting to note that the art of gesture and grace has almost disappeared from portrayals of either sex- what clumsy, lumpish creatures we modern folk would appear if transported to Renaissance Italy or France.

Your digital work is so clean! I love the colours as always, in this they're so warm and natural and I love how he sort of looks as though he's explaining something to someone. His hands are brilliant, and so animated. I wonder what he's saying hmm... Or maybe he's trying to understand something alone and is repeating it out loud to himself complete with hand gestures.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

akitku In reply to Sleyf [2016-08-23 13:04:50 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It's not as clean as I'd like...the line-art kind of sticks out too much...and I'd love to be able to add more texture but I'm not sure how...
Ah, I think he *is* one of those people who practice what they will say alone. Not what I was thinking of originally, but a great idea! Thank you!

Sleyf In reply to akitku [2016-09-01 08:40:45 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Oh I kind of like that (but then again I've always been a fan of outlined work, but what you could do is set a colour layer on top and sort of go over your lines with skintones or clothing tones to hide it.Β  What I do if I feel it's too bold, is use the layer affects (in photoshop) and give the lines an 'outer glow: - but set that to something like multiply or darken and then pick the same colour as the lines and play around with the scale and such, lower the opacity too - it kind of works to blur the sharpness of the line edge, but in a way it also makes the lines bolder - BUT I also think disguises them too...if that makes sense.
Oh it's *pretty* easy to add more texture, one way to do it would be to find yourself some texture stocks on here (there's loads, depending on what you want, but parchment textures are nice) - then paste it onto a layer above the lineart and colour and play with the 'layer effects" until you find one you like (I'm never very good at this part to be honest)
Another way to add texture would be to find some different brushes that would create that - like stone-texture brushes.
People have come to accept the fact that when he's talking alone, he's not, in fact, going mad or plotting with someone

Ah, gosh thanks so much for the advice! That's so kind of you! I tried it out and I think I will be doing that from now on! The lines look much better and are still clearly visible while not sticking out so much.

True - though he might be coming up with snappy comebacks to use in the future. Oh the shame if anyone hears!

Sleyf In reply to akitku [2016-09-16 21:03:00 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! I'm glad my blabbing actually made sense.Β  When in doubt 'disguise it with fancy layer effects' - that's my art motto - though it doesn't work so well with traditional

Lol, at least he's always prepared then, he doesn't have to mull over it for hours then come up with a great zinger that he could have used but now it's too late!
Nahh no one will hear, he probably has a fountain in there so eavesdroppers can't hear him
