Description Something inspired me to start drawing MLPs again...I'm not really sure what it was, though. Maybe something I saw on the Internet.

Anyway, anyone who's watched the original specials and TV series may notice how new types of ponies were introduced at various points. The rainbow and baby ponies were introduced in "Escape from Catrina", the twinkle-eyed and flutter ponies were introduced in the movie, and many different varieties were introduced during the "My Little Pony and Friends" TV series. These introductions, of course, were there to advertize the cartoons' toy counterparts, which were released around the same time as the special/movie/cartoon was aired.

However, there were a lot of ponies that never made a movie or TV appearance -- in fact, in many cases an entire variety didn't appear in the cartoons. Though I can see how impossible it would be fitting all of the ponies into the TV show, I can't help but remember how some pony designs started getting pretty unconventional towards the end of Generation 1's run...so unconventional that the writers might just as well have said, "Sorry -- there's no way we could make that work as a cartoon."

So here's a short list of just a few varieties of ponies that didn't make it to the cartoon.*

(And here's a short guide for all you young'ns who didn't grow up with these strange little critters...)

Precious Pocket Ponies: These ponies have raised symbols that form a little "pocket" attached to their side, and a tiny item is hidden inside it (attached to the pocket by a short length of string). They're innocent-looking enough in toy form, but if they were portrayed as living creatures...well, I'd think some of the ponies in the series would be a bit weirded out. (Secret Blossom, Strawberry Surprise)

Dance 'n Prance Ponies: These ponies have a flower-shaped knob (excuse me, brooch) on their chests. When you wind it, the tail whirls around, making them "dance" across a flat surface. My imagination may be pretty dried up, because I can't really see how the whole "huge knob sticking out of chest" element would make the transition from toy to cartoon. (Baby Noddins, Baby Cuddles, Songster)

Twice as Fancy Ponies: Ponies with symbols that cover their entire sides. There are actually a lot of ponies like this, but not all of them fall under the Twice as Fancy label (the yellow pony is a Sunshine Pony -- these ponies have hair that changes color in sunlight). (Sand Digger, Merriweather)

Secret Surprise Ponies: Larger-than-average ponies with a hidden compartment in their backs.** When you "unlock" them by turning the key in the lock on their chests (again with the chests!), the blanket-shaped lid on their backs will pop open, revealing the compartment. Even the backcard story (which describes the Secret Surprise Ponies enjoying a day at the beach) straight-up says that they have "hidden compartments" under their blankets. In other words, they're ponies with a huge freaking hole in their backs. How would that work? (Baby Yo-Yo, Baby Shaggy, Pretty Puff, Powder)

Cutesaurus: A Pony Friend -- a non-pony that still has the same look and symbols as a pony. There was a llama, a camel, a zebra, a giraffe...and a dinosaur named Cutesaurus. It makes me think that when the designers were working on these toys, they eventually just threw up their hands and said, "Ah, what the heck -- just throw a dinosaur in there! The kids won't care -- they love dinosaurs, don't they?" (Cutesaurus, Paradise***)

*All the ponies except Secret Blossom and Cutesaurus were ones I had as a kid.

**They also have tiny hearts in their eyes. Way to rip off your predecessors, G3...

***And when Ponyland's foremost authority on all things legendary and esoteric (as Paradise was portrayed in the original show) thinks that there's no rational explanation for something like Cutesaurus, you know you've gone too far.

*checks* Hey! There are no mini-ponies hidden inside the big ponies!

That being said, this is informative. And inspiring.

Thank you!

I actually once saw a Secret Surprise Pony for sale on eBay along with a couple of Petite Ponies, and the seller's description said something like, "I found these two tiny ponies inside the big one when I opened it up."

I'm afraid that auction ended quite a while ago. I searched for it, but I couldn't find it.

Interestingly one Twice as Fancy pony, Scoops, did appear, but they shortened the number of symbols she had.

There is surprisingly little fan art of her on DevART. I think I've seen her drawn in the G4 style and in pictures and comics alongside other G1 villains, but other than that, there's hardly anything. Weird.

Anyway, I had a good laugh at this!

Great expressions and funny ideas!

But I'm not sure why you choose baby Cuddles, since she is in one of the episodes.. oh, I just realized, Paradise is too, sorry! Probably was a choice you made!

Thank you!

To answer your comment, Paradise, Baby Cuddles, and the other more "conventional" ponies aren't the "Rejected MLPs" of the title. They're just there to participate in the gags that center around the various types of ponies that are (Twice as Fancy, Secret Surprise, etc.).

Precious Pocket Ponies & Secret Surprise Ponies I think could work into forms of ponies with Pouches like a kangaroo.  Twice as Fancy I think could work for 1 off episodes, and Cutesaurus..... IT'S FREAKEN DINOSAUR DO YOU REALLY NEED A EXCUSE? Need a excuse time travel, too complicated? magical persevered egg! works for me!

Meh, I could see them putting the Pony Friends in the G1 cartoon. I think they were to be to the Little Ponies what the Care Bear Cousins were to the Care Bears.

Akril15 In reply to writemaster93 [2013-03-16 21:30:14 +0000 UTC]

I guess it was easier for the Care Bears cartoon to incorporate the Care Bear Cousins because A), they and the original bears existed in roughly equal numbers; and B), there weren't around 50 new bear characters being produced every year while the cartoon was airing, unlike MLP.

Speaking of which, what did you think of the cartoon? I saw both specials, the movie, and all the episodes, and I came away thinking that while it wasn't horrible, it wasn't spectacular either. The ponies were all likable, but they had zero flaws and were as one dimensional as paper, the other characters were about the same. The villains were good and episodes were either hit-or-miss, I'd either like it, feel 'meh' about it, or dislike it.
Fav ponies-Fizzy, Wind Whistler, Sweet Stuff
Fav episodes-The Ghost of Paradise Estate, the Return of Tambelon, the Magic Coins, Crunch the Rockdog, the Revolt of Paradise Estate, the Golden Horseshoes, and Flight to CLoud Castle.

I liked the cartoon as a kid, and I still enjoy it as an adult (even if it is mostly for nostalgic reasons). Sure, there were a few episodes that were pretty bad, but some of episodes (like the ones you mentioned) were pretty fun. I was also much more into the magic/fantasy elements of the stories than the characters themselves (this was one of the main reasons why I really didn't like MLP Tales -- "Hey, no fair, where's all the unicorns and pegasi? I want to see some fairy taleish stuff, not The Babysitter's Club with ponies!")

However, I wouldn't say that all the ponies are flawless. Shady had some real self-esteem issues that she had to constantly be talked through, and a couple of times, the ponies' habit of being so unconditionally loving and accepting is what causes things to go wrong (like in "Fugitive Flowers" and "Woe is Me").

Wind Whistler has to be my favorite pony, since I think I identified the most with her.

writemaster93 In reply to Akril15 [2013-03-18 00:07:23 +0000 UTC]

That's the exact reason why I did not like MLPT.

As for bad episodes, I felt Bright Lights was boring, The End of Flutter Valley was way longer than it needed to be, Pony Puppy was an example of why they SHOULDN'T have had a song in every ep, Throught the Door was wasted potential, as was Spike's Search, and I felt they could've ended with something better than The Prince and the Ponies.

Heh -- things were almost the opposite for me. I watched the MLP TV specials, movie and the show a lot as a kid, but I had no idea that some of the characters actually existed as toys. (For a long time, I thought that the Flutter Ponies were just characters in the show and the movie!)
