This is amazing... around 15-20 years ago (guessing more 20 than 15) I made 5-6 live pencil sketches / drawings of the exact same kind of bird in exactly the same position, only "my bird" was just a kid (if birds have kids, I'm not sure if that's the right word). I saw one of them recently, that's why I remember.
Compared to mine you did a really great job with this one. Well, even if you don't compare you did, as I know how these birds are supposed to look, so the anatomy is just perfect. You got that 100% right And then watercolour is more complicated than pencil, so it's quite impressive. Also, I love those tree-branches, especially those in the foreground and those coming in from the right
An instant favorite
As you encourage more advanced comments I'll try. I might be right, and I might be wrong, and others may have entirely different opinions..
Perhaps the red colour should have been a slight tone darker, but I'm not even sure about that as those colours may not be the same around the globe, in all seasons, and depending on the daylight. However, it should have been darker on the lower part of the belly, just above the ground, as that would be where the shadow would fall if light came from above. You have made the belly feathers slightly lighter, which is probably 100% right colour-wise, but light-wise the shadow on the lower belly is missing. However the dark grasses and the shadow cast on the ground compensate for that so that it does not look like the bird is hovering above the ground.
I like that you take some of the red tones from the bird and use those in the surrounding landscape / the snow (it looks like snow). Especially right below the bird. This gives a "collecting" effect on the picture, as otherwise snow shadows are blue toned and the red on the bird would contrast with that if you had not used that trick. Brilliant

Your eye is accurate. The underside should have more shadow and would also settle the bird down into the snow a bit more convincingly. Now that we have a few robins showing up here this spring, I will see if I can make a bit of careful observations color-wise, too.
I always appreciate an honest appraisal of my work. Thank you.

Oh, you're so very welcome And while my eyes are very accurate in picking up details I still couldn't do what you do with the watercolour

I love birds. And when I look at them I always look at the eyes to see the "individual" and you really managed to capture this one's. Not making it look lifeless, but full of life. Also great job on painting the texture of the feathers.

I think you realise after visiting my gallery that I love nature. All that it encompasses. I also am an amatuer bird watcher (can't be bothered with all the latin names hahahahaha) This painting drew me right too it. I love the way you have captured it. The vibrant colours, the twigs poking out from the snow. Just gorgeous. I have to favour it. Thank you for bringing the robin alive

I mean the broad strokes like the shadow just beyond the robin's shadow. Looking up, I can see you did so with some of the others, so I feel silly with what I pointed out. This does have so much depth! And the branches are cool stark against the cold day that's barely spring...

This rocks. This just rocks. The bird is gorgeous, the snow feels wet and cold, everything's right.
The only possible suggestion I'd have would be to continue a couple of snow-strokes off the side past the margin of the paper to open it up -- but you may have intended them to fall more within it and draw the eye back to the robin or show he's in a slight depression in the snow.
So much implied with so few strokes. I really have to study your work!
