Yeah he did have some gambling cards, just saying that Joey's deck is basically a gambling deck with all the spell and traps

Although I do know that there was a point in the manga where he was being beaten by a newbie by her superior defensive strategy and won by taunting her and making her attack and have her strategy go up in flames

I think there was more to it than that, as said newbie was considered to be just some "throw away pawn" by her peers... Her deck even being referred to as such.
