If you happen to be in the lower 48 United States.
It's only a matter of time, however.

Love this stamp lol. Altho certain subscpecies's of wolves are endangered, gray wolves themselves aren't

Mexican wolves are critically endangered, I believe. Can't say I'm up to date on the rest of my wolf subspecies however.

Yeah, Mexican Wolves and Red Wolves are critically endangered. Gray Wolves aren't tho, there are plenty out in the Rocky Mountain ranges and Alaska.

I have a stamp about red wolves actually- there's a lot of debate about whether or not they're a true species or just a coyote/wolf hybrid.

those were subspecies right? or 'breeds' of canis lupus
the bufflo subspecies, was that extinct?

subspecies?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kuwaizair In reply to KovoWolf [2009-11-06 17:22:04 +0000 UTC]

oh i thought they were a sub sub species, tundra wolves and timber. they are all grey wolf but more of a breed/type.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WildGriffin In reply to Kuwaizair [2010-02-01 22:19:28 +0000 UTC]

Tundra and timber wolves are not subspecies.

The Arctic wolf is commonly mistakenly called the Tundra, and Timber is another name for the species Gray Wolf.

I thought I would clear that up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DiardiWolf123 In reply to WildGriffin [2010-05-01 17:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Actually, they are subspecies.

Grey wolf = canis lupus
Arctic wolf = canis lupus arctos
Tundra wolf = canis lupus albus
Timber wolf = canis lycaon, different species of wolf that lives in southeastern Canada, It used to be a subspecies of the grey wolf but they recently changed that.

sorry for the extemely late post, but I thought that would clear things up!

I agree to some extent. The Eurasian wolf is not considered to be endangered, but the Mexican wolf, another subspecies of gray wolf, is considered to be critically endangered. But I do know what you're trying to say.

LoboSabio In reply to darkclaw-moonfeather [2009-10-24 00:36:05 +0000 UTC]

Yes and no. It really depends on who's running it and how much research they've bothered to do. If it's some idiot on dA posting a "Save teh wolves!" journal in which it becomes blindingly obvious they know jack shit about wolves, I'll ignore them. I tend to pay more attention to people who know what they're talking about.

Also: I just noticed that your stamp is still incorrect. According to the Michigan DNR's website the gray wolf is still considered endangered there due to a technicality. The technicality in question would be the US Fish & Wildlife Service's failure to collect public opinion before delisting. Hence, the blanket statement made in the stamp is not true, for the time being, at least.

I know I'm going to get some pithy statement in response but I still feel vindicated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alaska-is-a-husky In reply to LoboSabio [2009-10-24 15:05:59 +0000 UTC]

That's just the state of Michigan, and they're beginning the delisting process again. Wolves are still a protected species in several places, but that still doesn't change the point of this stamp.

A stamp is 99x56 pixels. Can't exactly squeeze many technicalities in there.

regionality is a bitch huh? I hear bobcats are protected in NJ, so if I want one it needs tags and to come from elsewhere. If i had one hit by a car I don't know if even salvage permit lets me keep it.

I read that they wanted to change some laws (wolves were the example) so that if North Dakota has 8,000 wolves, and New York had 800, then all wolfs are "ok"
(even if NJ had 200)

alaska-is-a-husky In reply to Kuwaizair [2009-11-06 17:32:52 +0000 UTC]

If an animal is roadkill then I definitely think you should be able to take it, although I can understand why states can be pretty strict about that type of thing. Try checking with your local game commission. Don't know if they'll give you a permit for any protected species, but you should be able to get one that extends to all non-threatened animals.

I think that if I ever saw something like a bobcat along the roadside I'd be very tempted to carefully sneak off with it in the trunk of my car whether it was legal or not.

Kuwaizair In reply to alaska-is-a-husky [2009-11-06 17:57:46 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to apply/buy a salvage permit for game and non game (then I need a taxidermy one to 'stuff it?) so i can be fine an legal.

I'd love to add one to my collection, I'd take extra caution in tanning and hope i could do the dirty work in a warm place so the job is excellent.

I'd grab the cat to, but the have low numbers in my state
[link]

fish and game has nothing on wolves

maybe the'll love me if i can raise burying beetles and i can feed the bugs..and have nice skeletons.

they could import those wolves right? Put them with the Mountain Lions, they can eat eachother and it balances out.

CurlyHairedDemon In reply to Kuwaizair [2009-11-06 15:46:20 +0000 UTC]

or we could have them eat the environmentalists. That would really balance things out!

Kuwaizair In reply to CurlyHairedDemon [2009-11-06 16:07:46 +0000 UTC]

well not the sane ones.

Like I said, where I am the cloest wolf is in a "zoo"

but the bear-heads are just as..loud. they just aren't part of the internetculture.
heck one moron "save the bears, ban the hunt" feeds them.

what a dolt huh? "omg i'm feeding bears in my yard, don't shoot my bears, we take away their homes and they have no choise but to break into your stuff/try to eat you because you smell like candy"

You aren't supposed to put bird feed off winter season anyway (keeps them staying and not migrating) but you can be fined if caught having feeders out (attracts bears and gets them not fearfull) you can't feed pets outside, really clean grills, be watchfull over compost heaps and may require state mandated expensive critter cans

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CurlyHairedDemon In reply to Kuwaizair [2009-11-06 16:16:08 +0000 UTC]

And feeding bears makes them associate people with food, making them more apt to go for humans, making them dangerous, and then the government has to kill them or put them in a zoo.

Gosh, what an idiot that guy must be!.
