Thank you.

I believe that these 'endangered grey wolves' everyone rants about are in fact under no threat of extinction. Something like low concern or least concern on conservation status? I'm a bit iffy on the facts, but thank you for the stamp.

alaska-is-a-husky In reply to Athazagoraphobias [2010-01-21 03:19:38 +0000 UTC]

I really don't think wolves will ever really be anywhere near "critically endangered", especially not with the amount of support they receive from the general public.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Athazagoraphobias In reply to alaska-is-a-husky [2010-01-21 04:55:38 +0000 UTC]

Of course they're not, and they probably wont ever be. They have too large of a fan base already. By 'least concern' I think the... whatever organization it is that assigns endangered statuses... means no worries. Not even on the radar.

As a Montana resident and being in the middle of the whole controversy, I completely agree with you. I've seen the numbers, I've seen the radio collar signals, I've talked to our wolf expert. I love wolves, but there is no way in hell they are endangered anymore. They are thriving in huge numbers here.

alaska-is-a-husky In reply to KodiakSunset [2010-01-24 03:06:46 +0000 UTC]

Greatly appreciate your input :> So many of the people that claim they're on the brink of extinction are so far removed from the wolf's natural habitat.

KodiakSunset In reply to alaska-is-a-husky [2010-01-25 04:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! There are more wolves here than we even know about. We recently discovered that a pack that lives north of our town has two breeding females... the pack is 30 strong. Originally, it was thought that there was only about 7 up there. Its gotten to the point where the wolves aren't just taking sick livestock anymore, they're taking down full grown healthy holstein bulls... we've even had a few packs that have been going around taking out dogs because there are just too many wolves for the land to sustain their current numbers. I'm actually rather surprised that our wolf hunt hit the quota so fast... but the number of wolves killed didn't even put a dent in the current population number.

Wow, and that's something that'll never make the papers either... I've heard of similar stories about large groups of coyotes that wreak havoc on pets, farms and local wildlife but for whatever reason it's much more acceptable to dislike and trap coyotes. I can only imagine how much more damaging a pack of wolves could be.

Given then amount of damage we've already done it's kind of our responsibility to help keep nature in check, even when it means culling the top predator.

KodiakSunset In reply to alaska-is-a-husky [2010-01-26 02:09:26 +0000 UTC]

So very true. I do love wolves, but I also understand the need to for us to practice population control. It really does upset me that people who know nothing about what is really going on her are trying to tell us that the wolves aren't doing any damage and that there isn't very many here. They aren't here... they don't know... and of course the true numbers never get published in the papers because the media likes the drama.

On the note of coyotes, they are classified as... oh geeze, I can't even remember exactly what they're called.. but animals that you can trap. According to Fish, Wildlife and Parks, even if you took out 75% of the coyote population, they would be back again the next year as healthy and abundant as ever. We actually have quite a large pack of coyotes behind my house that have circled us when we were out walking late, and they are constantly trying to call out the smaller dogs and puppies. They're really bad here as well.

sulfide In reply to KodiakSunset [2010-04-07 00:48:53 +0000 UTC]

I agree wholeheartedly with you. I've been debating this topic in a somewhat civil matter with 'wolfaboos' online in another area of the internet (lol), they tend to not understand the point of population control.

The only wolf that they are killing is the one that needs controlling, the Mackenzie Valley wolf.

There are three Distinct Population Segments (DPS) in the US as of 2003, segregating the Mackenzie Valley by itself when distinguishing the "Gray Wolf" from being on the endangered species list. The other two are the Mexican wolf (southwestern DPS) and Great Plains wolf (northern DPS). These are the only three subspecies of Gray wolf that live in the lower 48 states. In the early 1900s there was a fourth, the Eastern Timber wolf (Canis lupus lycaon) but Nowak's work suggests that this canid is something other than a gray, which they now refer to as Canis lycaon (it could either be a relative to the Red wolf or simply a species all its own). As of now, the Eastern Timber wolf only roams throughout the eastern portion of Canada, no longer northeastern US. The last wolf killed was in Maine, 1993.

Case in point: The Mackenzie Valley subspecies is the subspecies in question, the Great Plains wolf and the Mexican wolf are not being hunted nor do their populations have to be controlled. Studies have shown that the Mackenzie Valley wolf could survive annual harvests of 30-40% without even affecting their population in Alaska (as of right now, Alaska does a 15-20% harvest, showing that they will increase their hunting quota).

The Mackenzie Valley wolf is the only subspecies that was not persecuted -- until now -- only hunted, because its natural range and habitat was not in the lower 48 states. They roam all throughout Canada and Alaska until in 1995-96 when they were "reintroduced" (technically they were introduced because they are not the natural wolves from that area) to the Greater Yellowstone Area. Now that their population has grown in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, reports have shown the wolves dispersing even into the Dakotas. Their population is at around 11,000 in Alaska and around 800 in the lower 48 states, both populations rising.

In regards to this stamp, it is both half and half. The Mackenzie Valley wolf is NOT endangered, nowhere near it in fact. However, the Mexican wolf is CRITICALLY endangered, and the Great Plains wolf is listed as "threatened" because of its population hovering at around 4,000 wolves. These are the only three subspecies of Gray that are in the US.
