In the greatest political upset of Presidential Elections in America at the time, Republican Incumbent William McKinley was defeated by Democrat and 1896 Presidential candidate William J. Bryan, following the disastrous fallout of the cost of the Spanish-American War and a major downturn of the economy. William J. Bryan would be sworn in for his first and only term in March 1901 as the 17th President of the United States, as well as the first Roman Catholic President
