Behold Inanis the Guardian inventor, and his pet, Lativate

Born with the incredibly rare inability to capture and retain aura (notice no glowing markings on his 'filled' clothes) he quickly became an outcast among his people, unable to fly and barely able to chirp. Despite this, he has a near unmatched intellect, a skilled creator and tinkerer, although his early years of exclusion gave him an everlasting disdain for others. Searching for a way to allow him to fly, he began to research how beings were so easily capable of giving and storing aura, though he somehow wasn't able to. After years of investigation, he was finally able to find a way to take away the life energy of a creature (thereby killing it) and applying the same energy to inanimate object. Using this technique he created a stone mask, finally giving him the power of flight (though he has to recharge it regularly in an eerie sacrificial ceremony to extract energy and infuse it to the mask). Even in creating the process himself, he was still fascinated by the process of giving an inanimate object aura, and pondered the possibilities.
In an unorthodox experiment, he set out to enfuse life energy from one creature into the dead body of another. Only knowing how to infuse aura into stone, he coated the creatures body (in the case the dolphin like cloth creature) in a stone armor. The experiment, though as gruesome as it was, worked, and so Lativate was born (again). Though the process had in adverted affects; Lativate had to continually recharge, locking onto other cloth creatures and stealing their aura by force. And for a while, the two were content, living quietly alone together inside Inanis' workshop. But then the war started.
Though nearly previously un-noticed by others, those involved in the war effort grew fascinated by Lativate's ability to take away life so quickly and (relatively) humanely. Both sides came to Inanis, requesting stone creatures too, but ones on a much larger scale, and for a very grim purpose - as War Machines.
Finally being recognized by others, Inanis took them up on their pleas, finding ways to coat the large whale creatures in stone, and producing them on a scale near unimaginable. Though thought of at first as a perfect solution to the wartime effort, the Guardians became to difficult to manage, their size meaning they had to seek out aura on a much larger scale than Lativate, sometimes attacking those on its side. Before long there were just too many of them, and the guardians, finding fewer and fewer creatures to charge on, turned on their own creators.
It is not known if Inanis had a knowledge of the guardians instability, if he planned out what happened, but he, unable to retain life energy himself, was looked over by the stone behemoths. As his kinds numbers began to dwindle, he became overcome with grief and guilt, locking himself up in his lab as to avoid any more sight of death and destruction, were he has grown mad and dwells to this day.
