Description
I remember that recently, I was looking at the catalog of movies on Disney +, until I came across with this peculiar movie that caught my attention because of the animation it had, since it reminded me of the animation of the Gravity Falls series and of the Steven Universe series and how I enjoyed watching both series, I decided to watch the movie without having seen the trailer first, to see what it was about. This film that I am going to talk about is called: “Nahuel and the magic book” (here in my country is known as “Nahuel y el libro mágico”) a Chilean-Brazilian film directed by Germán Acuña Delgadillo, created by Juan Pablo Sepulveda and released in 2020. This film is about a shy, friendly and introverted twelve-year-old boy named Nahuel, who lives with his father named Antonio (who is very negligent and strict with his son, since he blames him for the death of his mother Consuelo, because she died during the child birth) who is a fisherman who live in a fishing area, but as much as Nahuel wants to have a better coexistence with his father, he is afraid to go sailing with him in the sea, because he is afraid of water, but one day, after escaping from two boys who bullied him because of his fear of water, Nahuel ends up in a strange house, where he finds a magical book called the Levisterio and steals it to find a spell that will help him become braver, but without realizing that he is closely watched by a redhead girl who can turn into a raven named Raiquen, who works for an evil sorcerer named Kalku, who has a lot of crows and can control crows and people as well and who wishes to steal the Levisterio to cause conflict on the island unleashing its darkest spells and to awaken the CaiCai, an ancient marine creature resembling a snake to destroy the island. Upon returning home, Nahuel reads a bravery spell from the book and the next day, he accompanies his father in the boat to fish, but unfortunately, a storm caused by Kalku causes the boat to sink and Nahuel and his father end up separated, Nahuel being found by a woman named Huenchur who is a Mapuche machi (a magician specialized in white and good magic) and a girl of his same age, a machi apprentice named Fresia, who tell him that his father was kidnapped by Kalku in order to obtain the magic book and upon hearing this, Nahuel, taking the book and upon realizing that what he did was what lead to his father getting kidnapped, goes with Fresia to rescue his father accompanied by a talking dog named Ruende, who has pending accounts with Kalku because he was bewitched by him while defending his girlfriend from the evil sorcerer. Thus, during the course of the story, Nahuel develops courage and bravery, learning not to depend so much on the magic book, finding courage within himself and appreciating his loved ones and managing to rescue his father (who regrets his cold and distant treatment that he had given his son, respecting him and promising to take better care of him) and to face his fear of the water, saving Fresia and learning to be more determined and self-confident, just as Ruende manages to save his girlfriend (who all this time was Raiquen, Kalku's slave) and the two recover their human form and at the end of the film, they all enjoy a picnic by the sea on the island. The truth is, the story seems very beautiful and moving to me and the 2D animation is one of the best aspects of the film, especially the settings and the design of the characters (the animation reminded me a lot of Hayao Miyazaki's animation studio, because the story is told with a good rhythm and good timing introducing all of the characters) although the development of the characters is little, but in the end the teaching ends up being learning to believe in oneself to find the confidence you need and do the right thing in the end, even if it is difficult. So if you are looking for a good movie to enjoy, I recommend that you see it for its visuals and for the story of bravery it tells and for the final rating I give it a final 9 out of 10 and I would definitely see it again to enjoy it from beginning to end.
