Description
Did this way back around Spet. 2004, and I'm still not sure if I like it or not. Half of it was done on my lap at an agricultural show, because being a Steward can be very boring if you don't take along something to doPlease note: this is a truly awful scan. My scanner has turned against me.
Mechanical pencil qith B lead, tissue and blending stumps.
20 x 14cm
level adjustment and border in photoshop
about 7 hours, give or take

This is a pretty nice piece Great hair, and nice shading- especially on the hand. Nice lighting on the eyes, too.
It looks like the side of her face might be curved inward a bit too much though. She does have a relatively "pointy" face (I'm looking at a picture of her from Phantom of the Opera), but in this drawing the inward curve makes her cheekbone look more angular than really it is.
I hope you don't mind the critique..:/

No, I don't mind. This is a really old piece, and the only thing I still like is the right eye.
I can definately see what you mean about her face, but I'm not about to change it, but if I draw her again, I'll keep it in mind!
Glad you like it anyway!

I told you that scanners - EVIL scanners - are gonna take over the world.
But your drawing still manages to stun me speechless anyway ...

Thanks for the ! This is an old one, but I seem to remember it taking me ages...over a period of several months

Really impressive work! You captured her likeness perfectly in this piece. (I liked Minnie Driver in Phantom of the Opera )

Thanks so much! This is a pretty old piece, so it's nice when people take the time to comment.
I haven't seen Phantom, although I want to. I gather it's a good film!

Thanks so much! When you are shading skin, you have to pay very close attention to where the shadows and highlights are fror it to look realistic. I use a tissue to help me smooth out my blending, after using the usual blending stumps. Hope that helps!

Prob'ly because it is pretty old....and I had no sharpener, so I was left with only a mechanical pencil, which meant that my shading style was a bit different. Glad you like it though!

The shading is great as always! I'm still contemplating the teeth... *ponder*. But I must say that the overall picture is really well done!!! I'm still trying to figure out how you make your shading so smooth. Great work!

Thankyou! I use blending stumps and a tissue to smooth my shading- stumps first, but they leave a blotchy finish, so then tissues to smooth that. What exactly is up with the teeth? They were particularly difficult to do, because, like so many British actors, Minnie Driver does not have perfictly straight teeth.
Thanks for the comment!

Great! I'll try the blending ideas on my next drawing. Oh, and teeth for me are seriously the hardest thing to draw. Don't know why, but they are. I understand now about her teeth and I think you did great on capturing them especially having them not be straight!

Wow, this is beautiful, it's very realistic and the shading is lovely. I love how you've drawn the eyes, they bring the whole portrait to life. Stunning work.

Ah, thankyou. It really looks much better in real life, but I tried scanning it in colour, which turned it green, but gave me some shadows, and then made it black and white. I really don't know what is up with all our electrical equipment at the moment-- it is all going haywire.

I'm not quite sure about the placing of her mouth - is it too much to the side?
But I like the cheekbones and the attitude of the piece alot...

I think it is probably in the right place, as I use a grid for the purpose of getting things where they should be, but it does look wrong. It's that awful black shadow. I really have to get a better scan. I shall attempt to do so, VERY soon, and see if that helps. I don't think I can stand this version, it looks awful.
But thankyou for the compliment, the +fav for Julia Ormond, and, of course, the
