Description
Bogart and Bacall. This is from a publicity photograph for "To Have and Have Not", the only film of their's that I have seen so far.
I'm very pleased with how this turned out- I think it may possibly be my best to date, although it looks a bit better in real life- solid black never scans as well as it should.
I apologise for the watermarking. I wish I didn't have to do it, but I need to protect my work, just in case....
Materials: 0.5 lead #B mechanical pencil, 8B solid graphite pencil, kneadable eraser, plastic eraser, blending stumps, cotton buds, tissues
Size: a little under A3
Time Taken: probably about 20 hours
Enjoy!
Edit: A big generic 'thankyou' to everyone who

I did this portrait 9 years ago, since then I've managed to collect all the Bogart and Bacall films. I agree that Dark Passage is a good one.

I sounded totally fake, didn't I??Β Don't know where McCall came from, but I grew up watching Bacall, even in a Bugs Bunny cartoon!!

G'day!!,
I just found your site and your work jumped out at me!Β Theres a song, forgot the title, but one of the lines is"...just like Bogey and McCall", and thatΒ says it!Β Your work could be noir photos, but they are your drawings.Β I will have to date myself,ha, but Mom and Dad were married in 1950, I was born not quite 2 years later.Β I can say, referring to a comment I read, by someone, the 50's was not scary.Β It was a time to hope and build, for progress and home.Β I truly think your works capture that.Β I love your Bogey and McCall.Β And, you need to protect your work these days.Β I would really like to be your watcher...Ill send a note too!

I think the song you're thinking of is Key Largo. I don't know it well myself, but I'm assuming it is referencing another of the Bogart & Bacall films.
I like the strong contrasts of the old Hollywood photos, with their dramatic shadows; they lend themselves well to pencil portraiture and it's a much more glamorous era to portray. I'm glad you like my work, thanks for the on this and the

Hello!
Absolutely, that is the name of the song..I 'bacall' now(I know, bad pun).Β Just wanted to say, I was in your beautifull country, years ago, during my Navy days.Β On leave, I was in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth..about 17 days all together.Β Great beer, wonderful people..if I could have stayed, I would have!...

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself while you were here! I'm not a drinker myself, but we're certainly known for beer. Apparently it's getting very expensive now, though, although this doesn't really affect me.
Pretty much everything is expensive here in Perth, though.

Greetings,
It wasn't so much the beer and wine, but the 'flavor' of the country that I enjoyed soo much.Β I had steak, at a restaurant, in 'the Rocks', in Sydney, that you cooked yourself.Β I flew to Melbourne on Trans-Australian airlines, then, about a day or so later, I again flew TAA out to Perth, W.A.Β And all that time, I was surrounded by the most fascinating people, warm, friendly, happy and welcoming.Β That is what I loved about the country and the PeopleΒ Those 17 days was, literally the high-light of my entire life, May 1977!Β I am glad for a new friendship and I will look forward to a new friends works!!

We visited The Rocks on a trip to Sydney last year, so many interesting little laneways! I didn't see a cook-it-yourself steakhouse though, that must have vanished by now, what a shame, it seems like such a sensible idea! If you were there in May the weather would have been pretty nice so it would have been easy to pack a lot into the day; we're starting to gear up towards summer again now so it's going to start getting very hot soon and I'm going to start getting lazy. The spring weather is lovely but I'm not so keen on the really hot summer days! I think Australia does have its own flavour, even with increasing globalisation Perth is still pretty laid back and small, which is pretty nice. When travelling it's always nice to be able to take note of all the little things that go into making a place different from what you're used to.

Well, nothing's perfect, and I'm certainly not going to do anything about it now, as it's been behind glass for a good five years. I've naturally got better since I did this, too.
Thanks!
