Description
Bogart and Bacall. This is from a publicity photograph for "To Have and Have Not", the only film of their's that I have seen so far.
I'm very pleased with how this turned out- I think it may possibly be my best to date, although it looks a bit better in real life- solid black never scans as well as it should.
I apologise for the watermarking. I wish I didn't have to do it, but I need to protect my work, just in case....
Materials: 0.5 lead #B mechanical pencil, 8B solid graphite pencil, kneadable eraser, plastic eraser, blending stumps, cotton buds, tissues
Size: a little under A3
Time Taken: probably about 20 hours
Enjoy!
Edit: A big generic 'thankyou' to everyone who

I haven't seen this film yet I don't think. I think the only one I've seen so far with the two of them in it is The Big Sleep. I love Bogey though, he's just, well, he's Humphrey Bogart! What else do you have to say? And congratulations on that Daily Deviation! This is well worthy of it, they look perfect!

SO GOOD! Wow!! I worked for a while on a picture of Ginger Rogers but this shading is so much smoother than mine! Mine still looks pencil-y. I don't know how to fix that

Alene In reply to Lohzy [2009-05-02 05:02:41 +0000 UTC]
Thankyou!
Getting smooth shading can depend on a variety of things - the kind of paper you use, which grade of pencil you use, what techniques you use for blending, how you lay down the pencil in the first place.... I find it's best to take it slowly, use a fairly smooth paper and soft leads, and to blend with tissues and cotton buds and lift with kneadable erasers right through the drawing (rather than just blending once and leaving it - sometimes I decide areas could be smoother and go back to them). You might find my tutorials helpful: [link] and [link]
I took a look at your Ginger picture. You did a nice job! Keep it up!

Do you have a tutorial? Or know of any good tutorials for beginners? My sister had gotten me some charcoal sticks and pencils as a gift one year, but I don't know how to apply it. It's different than graphite for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
...and I'm totally ing this!!

I've only done two tutorials so far - one on materials for pencil portraiture, and one on a watercolour technique. There is a graphite portrait-related tute coming soon, but it isn't finished yet, I'm afraid.
I've never got on very well with charcoal, (I hate it's scratchiness) but there are some artists who create wonderful things with it. I'm afraid the only one who springs to mind at the moment and has a few tutorials is ~phoenirius . You might want to check her out. I'm always happy to help with graphite-related things, though (I'm happy to help with charcoal, too, just not much use at all ). Good luck with your charcoal!
And thanks for the on this, and the
