Description Bogart and Bacall.
This is from a publicity photograph for "To Have and Have Not", the only film of their's that I have seen so far.
I'm very pleased with how this turned out- I think it may possibly be my best to date, although it looks a bit better in real life- solid black never scans as well as it should.
I apologise for the watermarking. I wish I didn't have to do it, but I need to protect my work, just in case....

Materials: 0.5 lead #B mechanical pencil, 8B solid graphite pencil, kneadable eraser, plastic eraser, blending stumps, cotton buds, tissues
Size: a little under A3
Time Taken: probably about 20 hours

Enjoy! Comments and favs are most welcome.

Edit: A big generic 'thankyou' to everyone who s this or another of my pieces. It was a lovely surprise to receive a DD for this, and while I'll endeavor to answer all questions, I just haven't the time to respond to all favs. Homework, you know. So thankyou!

Amazing! You really have a great control of shading, you know how to get the really dark colors in the picture

Thanks so much! I noticed long ago that many of the drawings I most admired had lots of darks in them, so I set myself to learn how - I achieve it with many layers of 8B graphite.
Thanks for the and, of course, for the ! Both are greatly appreciated.

Have I commented on this yet? I'm not sure.

Anyways, this is fantastic, I envy your skills with shading using a graphite pencil.

Though I'm ashamed to admit I've never seen the movie... ._.;

Corleinne In reply to ??? [2005-09-10 15:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Well...
Black satin - perfect.
Bogart's hand - so realistic you could touch it.
Details (e.g. the button on his cap) -
... the only bother would be Lauren's left hand. A bit flat IMHO. But that must be the scanner messing with the proportions.

On the whole - I'm SO envious...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Corleinne [2005-09-11 03:17:38 +0000 UTC]

Yes, there wasn't much shading on that hand- there wasn't much shadow, and I didn't want to add any in case I made it too heavy- I wanted her to glow. And then there was the scanner as well....
Sooo glad you like it! Thankyou!

ooooh! Great shading!! looks just like a photo! I especially like the light shining on her hair.

Some other movies i've seen with them together were Key Largo, and The Big Sleep. Both were pretty good! Keep it up! yay!

I was just admiring this again--you really excelled yourself with the different textures, as well as the likenesses! Perhaps one thing that could use a bit of improvement is the hair on the back of Bogey's head. I'm guessing it looked close to solid black in the reference photo, but I'd take a little artistic license and add a bit of contrast and texture to it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to SixStringer [2005-09-09 02:28:20 +0000 UTC]

Hmmn....I see what you mean. I hadn't noticed that- not that I had forgotten to add texture there, but that it hadn't showed up in the scan. I did give it texture, but it appears to have been lost, probably while I was tweaking levels. Oops!
BUT! I'm so glad you like it!
