Description Bogart and Bacall.
This is from a publicity photograph for "To Have and Have Not", the only film of their's that I have seen so far.
I'm very pleased with how this turned out- I think it may possibly be my best to date, although it looks a bit better in real life- solid black never scans as well as it should.
I apologise for the watermarking. I wish I didn't have to do it, but I need to protect my work, just in case....

Materials: 0.5 lead #B mechanical pencil, 8B solid graphite pencil, kneadable eraser, plastic eraser, blending stumps, cotton buds, tissues
Size: a little under A3
Time Taken: probably about 20 hours

Enjoy! Comments and favs are most welcome.

Edit: A big generic 'thankyou' to everyone who s this or another of my pieces. It was a lovely surprise to receive a DD for this, and while I'll endeavor to answer all questions, I just haven't the time to respond to all favs. Homework, you know. So thankyou!

Oh wow Alison this one is great! My favorite drawings are always ones that show some kind of emotion, i.e. passion, love, someone seducing someone ::raises eyebrows:: His hand is probably my favorite part.

Thanks so much!
I wanted to work on interaction- you don't get much of that in single-person portraits And these two had such chemistry on-screen, I wanted to see if I could get some of that on paper. .
So glad you like his hand- I had a bit of trouble with that!
Thanks again!

I guess you already know how much I love those two! A beautiful image of them here. You should really check out more of their work, either together or separate--so many great films.

As I've said before- that is easier said than done! It is very hard to find old movies here- and on top of that, our video library just ditched over half of it's classic movie collection. Now: No Bogart and Bacall, no Rogers and Hammerstein, no Marilyn Monroe (except 'Some like it hot') ..... practically nothing. And lots of copies of Charade and Frankenstein. (about 5 each Don't ask me why) So I have to buy movies (when I can find them, and when I have enough money....)
But, enough ranting.
So glad you like the pic! Thanks so much for the !

Funny about Charade--that's one of those classics that seems to play on TV all the time over here. There seems to be a world surplus of Charade

i'm speechless seeing this.
first of all...this is one hell of a great reference to draw. it amazes me to the core, so to speak.
the detail in this is simply amaing. mad respect for your patience and obvious dedication to the theme at hand.
and the media you've chosen really adds to the general feeling of classical movies. I don't think think that one could achieve the same effect with a painting.

so...i'm no traditional artist, but i adore this...marvelous job!

Thanks ever so! I loved this reference- it had such interesting tones, and I wanted to try some character interaction as well. I've loved old movies for years (long before I ever started to draw portraits seriously) so I have a good idea of the theme and age, and so I adapt my pencil skills to each portrait, depending on what I want to portray, and what I understand of said theme. I don't really think about it while I do it, but afterwards, I can see that that is what I did.
Thanks for the too, btw. I'm so glad you like it so much!

The hair always looks so good ...

Satin eh ... man that really must have killed you, it woulda done that to me. I wouldn't have bothered heh .. you put in so much effort :s It's amazing, I reckon I can touch it except for the screen of course which is in the way ... Love the expression in this one, especially because it's so close up on their faces hehe Wow the texture in her hair is amazing there, all those little highlights really look good. The contrast between the skin textures is something I noticed - isn't that funny, guys have this leathery coarse sort of skin when they age, and women keep it nice and smooth. Heh. Look, your picture's making me think strange things ally ... well it looks great anyway, nice work ^-^

Alene In reply to F-2-8 [2005-09-06 00:39:25 +0000 UTC]

I enjoyed doing that hair! Lauren Bacall really has honey-coloured hair, but the reference made it dark with interesting highlights.
The next time I do satin it will be easier- I'll know what not to do before I start!
I'm so glad you noticed the skin textures! I used blending stumps, then tissues, then a cotton bud on Bacall, but only blending stumps on Bogart. I wanted to keep that texture.
Thanks for the too!

Today, my black scaned as solid grey. I had to adjust the layers in Photoshop, and it still doesn't look like the original!
