This is for a theory a friend and I put together.

To sum that theory up, Lance being the new Lone Wolf is being ignored when he figures out that Shiro is actually Kuron, a Galra sleeper agent sent to sabotage Voltron. Because Kuron was programmed to take out any possible threat to his mission, Lance is targeted. He tries to send a distress call to Keith who only manages to catch “spy” or something of the sort and instantly thinks it’s Lotor since the end of season 4 had him supposedly “On their side”. Keith, no matter how many times Kolivan told him no or if he lets him go, manages to get to the castle of Lions where he’ll find out it’s not Lotor and is actually Kuron and he’s attacking Lance while he’s unarmed.
The biggest factor here is that Keith would know that the real Shiro would never harm a teammate unless it was absolutely dire, such as Matt’s incident, so he’d understand right away that this wasn’t the real Shiro and in fact Kuron.
There’s also where Lance runs off to go get the others, but obviously, they don’t listen but Keith leads Kuron to the deck and they finally realize Lance was right.
Obviously, this is just a theory and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Take this how you will, Klance, some form of Sheith, I don’t really care. This was by no means meant for a specific pairing.
