Description This was a color key done for one of my layout classes. The assignment was originally supposed to just be blocking in shapes and colours to define composition, but I took it a bit further on my own to experiment with different styles of textures. I chose to do this layout because it gave me an opportunity to work with textures I have never digitally rendered before, such as grass, leaves, different styles of bark. I'm still relatively new to digital rendering, so this was a good opportunity to practise these textures.

Yes I do, although not as much lately. My main focus is character animation, but I still do some layouts for commercial work. Lately they have mostly been 3d models due to my current job.

A tremendous sense of depth with this piece. Great detail especially on the grass- fantastic gradation and detail fall-off. The framing is also great and there's loads of leading lines pointing at your focus. I also enjoy the light playing off the trees- it adds so much atmosphere. Great work

I love how efficiently you have created and rendered all of the objects in the scene--it has a lot of depth to it and I can tell you put in tons of effort!

This is beautiful Alex! the colours are brilliant & i love the way you did the bark on the trees! lots of detail without overpowering the overall look of the picture. that's something that i really love - when a picture is balanced enough that you can appreciate the picture as a whole as much as every little detailed bit.

This looks wonderful, like a scene you would see in a concept art book for an animated film! I really like the subtle colours you've used; they're light and earthy enough to successfully convey the serenity of the scene. I think this piece really highlights your skill at digital painting!

Thanks, we've started doing more digital painting in school so it's been a lot of fun learning new skills with digital painting.

Sometime you gotta show me your photoshop painting skills, I gotta get better at really painting and steer away from cel shading everything haha. I'll buy you Timbits if you sit down with me for a while and teach me ;D

I can show you how to paint like this if you teach me how to draw character like yours.

WOW that's a lot of detail. You sure go the extra miles when it comes to quality. Whether it's the rays of light or the texture of the trees, it's very pleasant on the eyes. You have done a good job sir!

I really like the way you handled this. It is very atmospheric. I would say that some of the tree park has almost a mechanical/metallic feel to it though with the solid bands that run horizontally around them. That is my one Nit pick. Otherwise no other complaints from me.

AlexanderHenderson In reply to RabidElf [2012-02-09 23:49:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I agree with you on the trees note. This whole color key was one big experiment with different textures. Over the course of this painting I tried painting the trees in a few different styles just to see what worked and what didn't. I ended up going with these, and while I didn't like the metallic feel, it felt like an improvement over trees that I've done in the past, so I just had to accept it for what it was. I'm definitely going to work on it though, and try for more natural one next time, so thanks for pointing it out.

Nice. It never hurts to go to a photo reference for stuff like that (If you don't already) What I have been finding works for me is doing assorted sized squares/rectangles over a darker background then adding a higlight and a shade. It's what I did on :thumb263428395: and I was fairly happy with the result.

The trees turned out great, great shapes.
The background that's faded in the light is a touch confusing. Not sure what it is.

great work. I love the feeling of it, I also like the subtle colours. very earthy, people paint stuff too bright these days and its looses its natural look.

Thanks, the color scheme was always sort of toned down for just those reasons.

Wow then it worked out really well with the renders , I really like the atmosphere of this painting. Good work, the only thing I want to comment is that its sad when you already took this further that you didn't add some of those lovely characters you make.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AlexanderHenderson In reply to inthemeadows [2012-02-09 23:55:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, I was going for an atmospheric quality. I actually purposefully left characters out of this because I felt that I need more practice designing layouts that could work as a stage for a character to be animated in.
