I did this for a contest at Advanced Photoshop magazine. The theme was circus, sooo I drew a tightrope walker!I made an artist statement for it of sorts:
I've never been to the circus; and after I began this picture, I started to look at other circus art. The more I looked, the more it became apparent to me that because I'd never been, there was a large difference in the way I've portrayed it. The single figure here, without anyone else involved, and the relative quietness of the colors and composition made me think of it more as part of someone's dream. I tried to bring out the 'dream' aspect of the picture through the soft coloring, her detailed costume and umbrella.

I adore this image! I love the contrast of light and dark as well as the detail on the outfit and umbrella. It does have a dreamy aspect, but not so much as to distract from the actual circus theme of tightrope, i feel.

The 'dreamlike' qualities make me think of a calmer moment in a Cirque du Soleil production, rather than a traditional circus. It's beautifully portrayed, either way - the colours are gorgeous, and the details are amazing. I especially love her bodice. Gorgeous work!

I remember loving tightrope walkers as a child and I'd pretend the curb was a tightrope and would try to balance on it as I walked. Ah, memories!
This looks so pretty! I like the lighting on this, the soft colors, and how dreamy this looks. I also like how it's evident that the rope is affected by her weight like that.

Originally, this piece was going to be called "Snap" and the picture was going to focus on the moment that the rope breaks, just before she realizes what's going on. I couldn't draw the rope right so I scrapped it after the picture was 3/4 of the way done, but maybe there's some leftover tension helping the picture anyway, since you mentioned it! XD
