8 shots?! How do you do that? Using a tripod or something I guess. But how do you keep the flake from melting due to proximity to your face and (presumably) above-zero camera equipment? My main problem is that I often breathe on the snowflake, so I get one shot. Or two. But not 8 perfect photos for layering.

Yes, i use small desktop tripod (Continent F6) for shooting at opaque dark background, and simple replacement of tripod for these shots at glass with backlight: it is short tube, or cylinder, mounted in front of lens. It stands directly at glass (with snowflake inside of it), and camera with optics stands on this tube and shoots vertically downward. I shoot at below-zero conditions (usually at -5...-20 Celsius), and background glass, this tube and camera's optics are cold enough to minimize melting. Also i use glove at one hand (which is closer to snowflakes; other hand without glove, because it is difficult to operate camera with it), and always try not to breathe in direction of snowflakes. If you are interested, i wrote small article about snowflake capturing in blog: chaoticmind75.blogspot.ru/2013…

I can't believe that snowflakes can also resemble stars or spears.

Very interesting one. The way each spike "splits" into two makes it look like it has 12 sides instead of 6
