What was the process in taking this photo? Did you have to leave a glass pane outside while the temperature dropped and then just get lucky?

Yes, glass pane was cooled outside at least 15 minutes before shooting. Then, i place it horizontally and photographed snowflakes that falls on it, and light crystals from bottom side of the glass with LED flashlight. If you are interested, i described this process in details in blog: chaoticmind75.blogspot.com/201β¦

Yes, this is natural snowflake. This one is big and common snowflake type, called fernlike stellar dendrite. These snowflakes are really big, usually from 5 millimeters to whole centimeter in diameter (sometimes even bigger), and can be clearly seen in details with naked eye.

I would consider snowflakes as an inspiration for architecture, alongside:
diatoms, butterfly eggs, crystals, and spirogyra.
