It's pieces like this that solidify comics as an art form to those who look down on the industry.
Awesome.

Well, it was easier for me to remember because I only got to experience it the one time. It's not every day I get to meet so many artists. I was WAY into Image and especially Aegis Entertainment or Homage Studiod or Wildstorm or whatever they were called back then.
I still remember handing Sal Regla a Spartan card that he penciled for him to autograph. He was so surprised I even knew who he was - let alone have somethig he had done.

I think we were all taken aback that anyone wanted our autographs. Very heady times for young rookies.

Yeah, wish I still had those Deathmate books with the autographs. I have a few odd ball things, like a Brandon Peterson X-Men that he signed for me that night.
It was pretty cool, getting to hang out with you guys breifly. It was like being allowed backstage at a rock concert.

This is an awesome cover, Alex. One of the best from the series so far...

No problem. Been a fan of yours for a while. I even used to have an autographed comic by you from your Wildstorm days, (used to because most of my books were stolen a few months ago...). I think I got it autographed on the Deathmate Tour... Or at Wondercon.

Yeah, and it was like the biggest rockstar came to town. For Fresno to get something like the Deathmate Tour was incredible. You, John Ostrander, Joe Quesada, Sal Regla, J Scott Campbell, Trevor Scott and a few I'm sure I'm forgetting. I got to help out with security for the event. We had, something like 2,500 people show up.
In Fresno.
It was crazy.
And the tour bus was late. It just seemed to be status quo for anything Image related to be late - so there were a lot of jokes from the fans that night... But I got to talk to everyone after the fans left. Got a bunch of books signed - they're gone now - but it was a night I'll always remember. I mean, most of these guys were at the start of their careers... Look at them now. I think John Ostrander was the only big name already. Everyone else was more a "rookie" then.

Wow, that's so cool you remember all that! I wish I did. That whole tour was just a crazy whirlwind for me; fun, but hard for me to recall specific details. You're right about us being rookies. We all had done almost absolutely nothing up to that point.
Good times.

So my friend and I are wondering...is there going to be any point in time where your cover art for Angel: After the Fall is going to be available in poster form?
Because this is phenomenal. Any cover from 9 onwards, I'd love in poster form because they're just gorgeous. And right now, looking at this, I think that this is my favourite.
Wow.
Your covers are true works of art. I hope to have a fraction of this skill one day.

Aw thanks! I actually have no idea if posters will ever be made. That would be up to the publisher I guess. I certainly wouldn't mind it if they did!

Alex, that's just gorgeous. If IDW has any sense they'll not bother with an alternative cover for this issue

I don't like that the eyes are that big, but other than that, I have to say that this is the best likeness I've seen for Fred/Illyria in After the fall, for both covers and pencilling. She's beautiful.

This is wonderful. The soft shading combined with the hard edges of the puzzle pieces give this piece such an aesthetically pleasing value, awesome work!

So far you're my favorite artist to draw Illyria. Really nice work.

Thats amazing. especially since the blue tiles sorta delineate the blue tints and "splotches" on Illyria.
I loves the show ( and way AMY ACKER played the characters so differently)
I loved your inks and now am in awe of your painting.
BRAVO!

Wow, just WOW. How did you do this? Did you color two different images, then puzzle it together? This is one of the most stunning covers I have ever seen.

AlexGarner In reply to ChrisShields [2008-08-14 01:42:16 +0000 UTC]
Thanks so much! I first painted a Fred version and then an Illyira version based off Fred in Corel Painter. That went pretty quickly. The tedious part was putting both women together piece-by-piece using a jigsaw template layer as a guide in photoshop.

That's awesome. What paint types/brushes do you use in Painter?

AlexGarner In reply to ChrisShields [2008-08-14 02:02:54 +0000 UTC]
I use too many to name, probably around 30 or so at any given time depending on what I'm trying to achieve. Every project has different requirements. I don't use any paint types other than the default one and I almost always work on a single flattened layer to move around the paint/pixels properly. I only use multiple layers in Photoshop.

Thanks! Yeah, it just shows what a good job actress Amy Acker and the show's writers did to make both characters so different and yet so appealing.

geezone In reply to AlexGarner [2008-08-14 01:03:55 +0000 UTC]
When she first 'died', I believed she was a different actress. The suspension of disbelief was that great. The make up, her eye movements, acting, all of it.
That's something impossible to capture in a comic book, let alone the fact that in comics, death is transient so they could always make the mistake of bringing her back to life.
Looking at a cover like this though- makes you want it to be so.
