Description Just thought I'd show some of the process for this cover. I begin with the traditionally done pencil sketch submitted to Marvel for approval, then I work on the values and lighting in grayscale, and finally I add color and texture. In this particular case, with just a single character close-up, it wasn't very painstaking.

I adjust and tweak the structure as I paint. If you have the luxury of time, you can assess flaws much more objectively by setting the work aside and not looking at it for a few days.

awesome work man. But i'm curious as to how you go about adding color to the greyscale image.

It depends on how saturated I want certain colors. I use color layers, color balance layer masks, gradient map layer masks, and even color mixer layer masks. After that, I'll pile on even more adjustment layer masks to tweak the color to exactly how I'd like it. It's a very fluid process.

One thing I did here that you generally shouldn't do is make the grayscale version so refined and tight. It should really be in a looser state so that when you finally do add color, the final product will have more interesting color blends and texture. I tend to overdo the grayscale stage. Bad habit.

wow, thanks for the in depth reply! most humble of you.

i've gotta try some of those layer masks, usually i just do the levels and get so confuddled trying to add color i just tighten up what i've done and call it a day.

Just experiment with everything. It's how I stumbled upon my methods.

Well that's hard because each situation is completely different. I sometimes combine layer upon layer to get the scheme I'm looking for.

Let me mull over how I could do this...

so at the end you experiment on each pice...maybe just the setting you used for this piece

Exactly. I try a lot of methods for each piece, whether it's a color layer, color balance layer mask, color mixer, hue & saturation layer mask, etc.. or all of the above.

It takes time to get close to the palette I'd like, and even then I'm usually settling. I'm striving to get a less saturated and more realistic color scheme but it's tough. Still learning!

I second the request for a demo of using adjustment layers to turn greyscale to colored work.

Really interesting Alex, I always thought I couldn't color my drawings cause I overdo my pencils. This helps! I've been meaning to color my Darkseid vs Thanos. Think I'll give it a try.

Love it! And love the description too, I never worked in greyscale before. o.o It looks like a VERY interesting thing to try!

Thanks!

I just find that color really distracts me from getting values right. Grayscale is a good way to hold my focus.
