He became one cuz Twilight became one. And in my head cannon, all alicorns will live forever unless they die by external factors (i.e. fall from great heights, get killed by someone else) and he and Twilight love each other, so yeah.

As long as he has Twilight and his family, he won't regret being an alicorn. And thus he protects them really well. But, if any of them die, he will go into a super sad mode. Especially if Twilight is... you know, gone.

Ok In my head canon Twilight and Candace Became Mortal Alicorns because Celestia is tired for milléniums yeas of reign and want to have a normal Lineage Monarchie for Equestria and have a normal life with a family and Luna too. They royal are Alicorns because went Equestria was born the tree races want to have his own race to reign and the Alicorns are the perfect neutral race for all tree races. What do you fink of that ?

Ok, so alicorn weren't that rare at first They were a common sight. They wielded enormous power. But more and more alicorns started to become corrupt, going so far to simply slaughtering ponies for fun. Fueled by fear and anger, the population set to destroy the alicorns. This continued until Discord came around, who decided to punish the world and spread chaos. But he did not expect Celestia and Luna, the last alicorns alive at that time, to use the elements on him, turning him into stone. And so, all species bowed to the royal sisters, as they saved the world from endless chaos.
Within a year, Equestria was being properly established with the royal sisters as its monarchs. They also met a human and his friends (which is the blond mane alicorn in the picture) and helped rebuild the world. Celestia asked Starswirl for a spell to uplift a normal pony to an alicorn of he or she would be fitting for that role. This did not happen for over a 1000 years, as all candidates who showed great potential would eventually fall prey to the benefits of royalty or simply lacked the skills to rule as royalty. That was, until she found Twilight.
