Daily Deviation!

Thank you for suggesting
and for featuring!

It really means a lot for me!

And of course huge THANKS to all of you guys who commented and faved! I will read all your comments and try to comment back.. Though don't get upset if I'll reply with just "thanks" to some of you.. There are so many comments and I have so small amount of time to read them that It's pretty impossible for me to write long replies to every one of you.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Instead of writing down my thoughts about this piece I would like to ask you what do you see in it?
What deep message do you think it contains?
Or is it just another pointless picture?

Please share your opinion in comments.

In regard to the quirky, spiral fluorescent bulb, I see it in two ways. One, I despise the fact that our beloved federal government is seeking to eliminate one of Edison's greatest achievements -- the incandescent bulb. I see the pencil representing the words used in the aforementioned war on incandescence -- "green, global warming, carbon footprint, save-the-earth" -- twisted into a bogus argument; as if the majority of consumers give a rip about that. I don't buy them to be green; I buy them (and originally bought them years ago) for the savings they represented over time, in longevity and electricity saved. From that viewpoint, I see the common pencil representing the practicality of buying such bulbs, for the reasons mentioned. Just as it's hard to replace something as simple as a No, 2 pencil; I see the spiral fluorescent as not replacing, but becoming an ally to the incandescent bulb -- each serving its own purpose, just as the pencil is companion to the pen. As for the sharpener, perhaps the artist is trying to tell us that, in sharpening the pencil, it also destroys it. A message in metaphor?

I realize others will see different things, but this is the genius of art. The artist here, has taken two familiar objects and blended them surrealistically, making us step back and think about what it means. Is there a better reason for art? Perhaps, perhaps not.

boy, it would be difficult writing with a pencil like that @¬@
...if you did try writing with this pencil though, that's pretty symbolic by itself; it's metaphorical to the long-term artistic process (as in, not limited to one piece at a time [but it can be applicable to a short-term artistic process too!]) in my opinion!

the most difficult part of using this pencil would be at the very beginning, the concept of the idea, where sharpening it, or beginning to put it down on paper, would pose the bigger challenge with the sharp turn. then, as it get's shorter and shorter, it will have varying degrees of difficulty of usage, as it bends around the curves, with the easiest being on the outermost borders and the hardest being on the inner intersecting points, aka the intersecting/conflicting ideas... those two are opposite ends of the spectrum on the pencil.
as time goes on, it ultimately does become easier and easier because the pencil will eventually lose the complicated criss-cross. at the very end, when the lead is practically down to the eraser, it is both the easiest and hardest part of writing with the pencil; it is the straightest  and most to-the-point the pencil will be, but it is incredibly short and difficult to hold on to and just harder to handle for rather straightforward reasons.
erasing with the pencil will have the same relative amount of difficulty, it might be proportional to how long the pencil is but it really doesn't change by much. the only thing that gets lost in the eraser as the pencil gets shorter is the amount of eraser there is, the complexity doesn't change in any way like the pencil; it might be metaphorical with the artist's inspirational/motivational/patience/etc., just generally artistic, fuse in connection to their ideas and thought process... i could say more but this is just a comment after all.

so as the pencil grows shorter, the more ultimate the artists' work will be. quite poetic! i'm not sure if you intended for it to be metaphorical, but it was fun interpreting it, haha.

good work! it's been a long time fav

edit: i was thinking of posting a critique, but i noticed the option was disabled and remembered that this is actually a pretty old deviation... sorry if i'm repeating anything...
here are just some additional notes i'd like to make:
the technique is gorgeous. however, it does look a little obvious that its all 3d-modeled because of the lack of realistic definition and touch and having more of that cursed play-dough look, but i don't specialize in 3d modeling so i have no idea how you would improve upon that. (the sharpener looks real though.)
the over-defined visual effect (the scratchy-looking vignette and overlaying texture) is usually not very welcomed, but it seems to fit in here so, hey, good eye!

I see enlightenment through the written thought. The pencil signifies the written word. The bulb the pencil and the sharpener mimic is the idea (or thought). The pyramid in the background is the Light; it invites me closer, into the center where the bulb(pencil) is.

Inspiring piece. Thank you.

To me it like the frustration of the artist. You have an idea but even that is a challenge in itself. He we have the awesome pencil but how in the world are you going to get it sharpened with that sharpener. Great picture!
