Description here's a quick look how I went about this image. I know, looks like I skipped a lot of information, but these are just key steps...it's up to you guys to fill in the blanks on your own images
On a relative note, I'll be teaching a 10 week class in Los Angeles, starting April 16, on concept art and illustration, covering stuff like this and so much more. So if you wanna learn all deez tricks, come on out!

Here's the school: [link]

Awesome! Thanks so much for inspiring me. I got at it straight away and banged this out in a few hours using your tutorial.
This is my third digital painting I have ever done and I am pretty stoked at the outcome. I know it is rough and I am sure needs a lot of refining.
Keep it up.

you can google it, it's an easy process. If you want to see the actual way I do it, I make video tutorials. Look for the 'Brush Creation ' video: [link]

I wish I could go to your class, but I'm stuck in IL. I'd love to learn what you have to offer. Is there anyway I could get those brushes from you? If not that's totally fine.

Cool one m8, I like the idea and the result a lot.
The style of painting did think bring me back in thoughts to my stage/study periode at Playlogic when I watched 18 hours of gnomon dvd's

Cheers.

Inkthinker [2009-02-25 20:37:41 +0000 UTC]

It's a pretty neat technique, but are there concerns about the copyright of the original photographer?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AlexRuizArt In reply to Inkthinker [2009-02-25 21:15:08 +0000 UTC]

I didn't use high quality images from someones site, just low quality random pics on google. Also, they were heavily manipulated, so there is really no way of recognizing them as the original( unless someone puts the originals in a tutorial!)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Inkthinker In reply to AlexRuizArt [2009-02-26 01:06:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, right, but I wasn't thinking so much of the danger of being caught, so much as the implications of technique. I'm not sure if quality is at issue, even images on Google are sourced from someone's site, regardless of their resolution, and just as we have copyright on a drawing the moment we create it, a photographer has copyright on a photo the moment they capture it.

I'm not picking on you in particular, I also pull stuff from Google Image all the time and use it for everything from visual spot checks on details to outright lightboxing. It seems like it's one of those issues that artists have got to be more conscious of as it becomes more common, because I think it's not going to go away... if anything, it's going to be more common than ever.

I really like what you did here and I can see the implications for saving time and creating accurate, effective detail. But since you're being clear about the technique (which I appreciate), I'm interested in exploring the implications to their full extent. I'm thinking that photocollage would be the nearest neighbor to precedent for it, and there is fair use implication for transformative works (which this is) in existing copyright law.

Heh. I'm raining on the parade.
