Oh my gosh, you! This is the BEST tutorial I have ever read!
Most tutorials look half-assed and with typos even though they're a paragraph long, broken into 3 sections or something. THIS tutorial has a paragraph for each section! I had to take a break, get a drink and have a breather half way through in order to soak in all the greatness..
Thanks so much for putting all the time and effort into this.
I have learnt so much from this tutorial, you don't know how much it means to me.
I really enjoyed reading this tutorial, it remained wordy without being boring.
Your art is really beautiful<3
Thank you so much! >3<

What I'm saying is that it's hard to find honestly good work involving strong-looking females that doesn't involve scanty clothing. It's kind of depressing.

If that's what you think, that's fine. Not sure how that's naΓ―ve, though.

too bad you used gray though - gives it an unrealistic look. Hopefully not everyone will add gray. After all, skin is never gray in any shade in reality, right?

skin is never gray? I doubt that's true, and what about low light and overcast situations? Shadows are gray.
You might be thinking about painting with real paint. In that situation you don't ever use gray, but you oftentimes combine complimentary colors to make a grayish hue. You don't want to use gray when painting because the gray/black pigment is dull and lifeless, creating an unrealistic look as you said.
In digital painting the end result is the same #### color, so he decided to go straight to gray. That's one of the nice things about digital, and it obviously works for this piece.

Shadows are not gray, shadows don't have color whatsoever. They're just lack of light. The only reason skin can be gray is if you have white make up on it, like clowns do. Otherwise, just look at non-photoshopped photos, preferably those that were not made digitally - or just look closer at your own skin in the dark. It's just a darker shade, that is all.
it works for the piece, but it is a tutorial and as such, it should've mentioned something about that, at least.
I learned this the hard way - my boyfriend's professional artist uncle once complimented me on my IAMX drawing, saying it's a great accomplishment for me to know when to use gray. Sure, if you're looking for an imagined style drawing, gray can benefit you but if this is instructional and you're swerving young artists to use shades of gray like they're shadows, it's misleading. :/

It's nice to read a tutorial, that doesn't state the painting steps in a monotonic way. This tutorial doesn't have the voice of a teacher, it's more like a page of a process diary, the notes of an artist's self-reflection. It was a pleasant read, thank you.

Super Tutorial!
