Description
Nearly there now. All that's left to do now is the lights and possibly a background if I can be bothered. The large robot thing with the more advanced and time consuming shading technique I've been experimenting with.
Original here: [link]
Older progress shots / preview things are in my scraps.
Shaded using the lighten and darken retouch tools in PSP5.
I really want advanced critique here. Anything that you can think of that would help improve the shading used here. Anything that you think looks particularly good or extremely bad, please say so and why. Suggestions on how to do the lights would be good too.

Critique in advance:
most of the metal is bumped like it got beaten with a lot of hard things but the rings on his legs look like theyre polished and not hit at all.
the tubes with the liquids could use improvement. I think there are enough reference pics to be found on google on those.
about the lights...
this is a bit tricky since the metal is bumped.. there should be highlights on all the parts within the light radius of each light, fading as the distance increases. and ofcourse the lights are casting shadows on the otherside of these parts.
they may also need somekind of glow around the edges of the lights them selves.
kinda like this (the one on the right): [link]
(the bump map on my pic is screwed since vue uses greyscale for height.)
anyways,if you spend as much time on the lighting and background as you did on the shading, it will rock socks.

Thanks for that. I forgot to mention that I hadn't done anything to the tubes, but never mind.
I agree with you on the leg rings, they do look to new and polished. I could say that's because the robot just had replacements, but that sounds stupid. In fact, that was me experimenting with getting the metal to look different. I was testing slightly different ways to get the metal look. Of course, I'll probably redo the those rings to make it more consistant.
On the topic of the lights, I can see this being a pain in the ass. As you said, getting the highlights right is going to be important (and time consuming with PSP5). However, I need to find away to get the lights themselves to look right. Akuryou did offer a suggestion from the last image: [link]
