how do you get proportions right? do you use a grid or you paint over photo or you paint it 3 days?

I do trace the portrait roughly before I start to paint. It may sound like cheating but most digital painting tutorials recommend doing it that way. It saves a lot of time and grief...

no it's not cheating...you can trace the image, but coloring is what gives it realistic filling and coloring is hard job to do, especially dealing with shadows and highlights...and it's such a relief you told me this 'cause sometimes I thinks that I'll never be good

Heheh... It's not even my most realistic looking one so far as I've skimmed over a few details. I've done another one of Chris Pine which I will be submitting towards the end of this month and that one almost look like a photograph.

PURE AWESOMENESS, even for a non-trekkie.
That's what's the most amazing about it, IMO. Star Trek has finally managed to capture the non-Trekkies' imagination and interest and as a long-time Trekkie, it makes me very, very happy.

I agree. Reintroducing the entire Star Trek francise makes a difference, too; it makes it a bit more relevant to today. Younger non-Trekkies, such as myself, don't feel as if they'll never catch up with it. It's like a new generation.
