It really was a match made in heaven.
I once read a comment someone left after we saw our first clip of Urban as McCoy: "Karl Urban is possessed by the spirit of DeForest Kelley!"
Mr. Urban is a long-time Trek fan, and in particular, I remember reading that he was a McCoy fan personally and that his favorite episodes were the ones where the doctor saved the day, such as "Amok Time."
When news broke that they were casting "Star Trek XI," Urban had just gotten the TOS box sets and finished watching them with his son, and "actively pursued" the role of Bones.
Furthermore, the line where McCoy says, "...all I've got left is my bones" which leads Kirk to give him his nickname was supposedly improvised by Karl himself.

I didn't know the tidbit about Karl having improvised the "...all I've got left is my bones." line. Do you have a reference for that? I would love to find out where it was mentioned.
As for Karl being possessed by Mr. Kelley's spirit, I guess it's a great way to put it although I've never felt as though Karl's performance as McCoy was a carbon copy of the original. I think he brought his own flavour to the role and that's what made it so perfect.

Here is the link to the site/Blu-Ray review where that claim comes from. There is a sentence on this page that says that "Karl Urban wrote the line about where he got the name 'Bones' from" or something like that.
The page is a review of the ST:09 Blu-Ray set, and whoever makes the assertion got it from some of the DVD extras - I think it was the scene-by-scene commentary. There are other juicy tidbits that come from the commentary such as the fact that the Iowa traffic cop was voiced by J.J. Abrams himself.

I absolutely didn't think Urban's performance was a carbon copy and that's one reason I am so proud of the new cast - none one them did a carbon copy. To do so would have been a disservice to the original performances and to the spirit of the original characters.
Instead, they looked to the original for inspiration in the sense of trying to figure out just who these people are, and I think they all had to separate the 'characters' from the 'actors/performances' in order to figure out how to reinterpret this iconic crew in just the right way.
The fact that they were so successful at it is probably a big reason why the movie was so great. Karl says so himself at least once in interviews - if you look on the Wikipedia entry for "Star Trek (Film)" and get to the discussion of McCoy, it quotes Karl in an interview and he actually flat-out says that he tried hard not to just do a "carbon copy" of Kelley's performance.
