I’ve seen quite a few people around here who have brilliantly illustrated their Shepard’s backstory, whether in words or images, or both. I had been toying with the idea of doing it for Rachel but never really did anything about it until now. So here it is... I think I might've got a little carried away but oh well...

Rachel Shepard was born on Earth and lost both her parents when she was very young. They died in a shuttle crash on their way back to Scotland from a visit to a resort Colony on Arcadia. The closest relative Rachel had at the time was her father’s older sister who also lived in there. She was a mean-spirited woman who liked her Scotch a lot more than she did children so when Rachel ended up on her doorstep, it was clear that the poor girl wasn’t exactly welcome. Rachel still spent quite a few years in that country until her ant Edna passed away unexpectedly.

That’s when Rachel decided to go back to Canada where her mother had been born. She vaguely remembered living there with her parents for a few years and those were probably the only good memories she carried with her and still held on to. So much so in fact that she felt compelled to go back where home used to be all those years ago.

Unfortunately though, going back “home” didn’t end up being what Rachel had hoped for. With no outstanding skills to speak of, finding work proved to be a hardship as it was already a precarious task even for highly educated folks. Crime was rampant in the big cities and the only way for a beautiful young woman to make quick money was either through prostitution or by becoming an “exotic” dancer. Rachel chose the latter because the idea of offering her body to any of those repulsive men she came across every day made her sick.

That being said, she had no intention of staying in that line of work for too long. She was extremely ambitious so she quickly learned to use her charms in order to seduce a few of the most powerful men who ruled the underground urban drug world and those who reigned like kings over the very lucrative black market of alien weaponry. That’s where the money was and Rachel intended to get her share of the wealth even though she knew quite well how ridiculously dangerous this could get.

She rode that train for as long as she could until that fateful night where she got caught right in the middle of a major weapon raid. And since all the weapons seized that day came from other worlds, the operation fell in part under the jurisdiction of the Alliance. Rachel’s involvement in the operation was minor but it was enough to land her in jail for a couple of years. It was a very sobering experience for her, enough to convince her it was time to turn her life around by the time she was free again.

Her first destination when she got out of prison? The Alliance headquarters. Why? Well... in this case “why not?” is the more appropriate question. Their recruitment ads were all over the huge billboards across the city and Rachel thought she really didn’t have anything to lose at that point. She was expecting to be rejected and laughed at once her prison record came up. Instead, the man in charge of recruiting simply told her: “We need people like you, people who’ve seen the underbelly of the crime world, have done their time and lived to tell the tale. If you’re half the person you claim to be, you’re exactly what we need. So long as you always remember who you'll be working for, you're gonna do just fine. Now get in line with the others.”

Yeah, I'd say she did a little more than "just fine"...
