Doesn't methane require the presence of oxygen in order for combustion to occur?

Wouldn't happen. You'd need an equal part of Oxygen and Methane and also in a density which is impossible in nebulae. Sorry to rain on your parade, it's an interesting pic by itself but the concept is highly flawed.
