As much as it pains me, I must admit the animation probably isn't terribly accurate. I happened to choose a topic that has surprisingly few resources available that clearly show the sequence and tendon attachments. I did find two dissection videos but they both skimmed over what I really wanted to see. Sigh.At any rate, as a schematic it'll do. Cat claws!

I've been wondering for a little while now, but where does the claw come through?
Like is there a hole in the skin for it to go in and out of? and if so, is it covered when the claw is inside?

So, the best way I can explain it is a sort of weird analogy...Imagine your arm in a tight, long-sleeved shirt. You know how when you try to pull your arm out of the sleeve, the cuff kind of pulls back with your arm and you end up with half the sleeve inside the shirt?
It's sort of like that lol. The outside cuticle of the claw is attached to the skin, but when the claw is retracted that bit of skin pulls in a little bit too.
It's easiest to see on a Sphynx cat because they're (nearly) hairless so the fur isn't covering the paw -Β photo here. Β So they look a bit like holes or slits but it's really just where the skin folds in a bit to where it's attached to the retracted claw.

As depressing as it is, my family and myself declawed so many cats over ten years ago because of the white lies spewed from the people we paid to have it done. Veterinarians always told us it was completely harmless and all those garbage lies. I hate declawing now, but my folks keep asking me to just give in because of their dang furniture. Β I hate it....

Mmmm I can't believe how so many vets are willing to do the procedure. Many people would understand if the vet just explained it to them. ;w; I think its popularity has dropped and many vets flat-out refuse now, so hopefully it's changing.

Now that you mention, I don't remember seeing a detailed visual regarding them. Not that I've looked for it, but I do a fair amount of other research that might have run me past such a resource.

I was surprised at the lack of information! There is one incredibly cool video out there of a tiger dissection (old zoo animal, I think) - the person pulls the flexor tendons and the claws come out immediately. And since it's a tiger, the claws are IMMENSE. Great video...but still doesn't show me exactly what bones it's working on! D:
