I'm not really sure how to mount them myself.  Maybe, if you do make them, leave extra metal on the arm (the part where it would attach to the shoulder) and use that to sew the arm to... perhaps a leather belt worn around the chest?

The ones I made ended up being very small, so that probably wouldn't work very well if you are making bigger ones...

I intend to make them small for wearing in school. Thanks anyway!

I am planning on making a costume using this idea. I am about 5' and very small. do you think that if I used the larger umbrella it would look normal compared to my body size?

Aliuh In reply to QueenDracoDharriott [2016-07-23 19:36:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think using a larger umbrella would look good, but I think they would still probably be pretty small.  As far as getting a realistic sized wing, I don't think they make umbrella's that big. XD I can't remember for sure, but I believe I used an average sized umbrella and only got the two 13'' wide wing from it.

This is something I'd definitely want to try...just so I can have wings. My Grim Reaper might want an Angel of Death partner XD

I don't think I could make a video at this point, but I do plan on refining the technique and when I do I will definitely make a video for you.

I'm sorry of this is a stupid question but do they bend?

Aliuh In reply to SoccerStrider01 [2015-11-29 02:57:13 +0000 UTC]

I don't think that's a stupid question.
They bend at the elbow, and each 'finger' bends at 'hand' but there are no finger joints so they don't bend.

How do you put them on though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Aliuh In reply to LeedsNinja [2015-08-31 15:59:03 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... I hadn't gotten that far.  I made them to use as reference, not to be worn, but maybe you could attach them to a stiff material like a leather belt worn around the chest? I would drill a hole in the end and maybe try sewing it to the leather with some kind of re-reinforcement.

LeedsNinja In reply to Aliuh [2015-09-01 05:38:01 +0000 UTC]

Alright, thanks! I'm looking at a whole bunch of different ways right now. I have to do something that I could fold up in the halls of school so I'm gonna play around with a few things. Definitely gonna try to make these as reference though, they're good.

Hey, just out of my own curiosity, with this technique, can you make the wings articulate? I've been searching around for a good technique for a Meta Knight cosplay where I can have the wings articulate.

Thanks in advance, kudos to you for creativity ^.^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aliuh In reply to MercuryBitt632 [2015-05-10 16:44:46 +0000 UTC]

By articulate do you mean rotate freely, or rotate and stay open and where you place them?  I did have an original design that actually used the opening mechanism of the umbrella to open and close together, but that didn't look as good and was temperamental.

Thank you!

MercuryBitt632 In reply to Aliuh [2015-07-16 03:34:00 +0000 UTC]

I was hoping for stay open just cause then you can hold the sword and still keep the wings open. Thanks for getting back to me, as you can tell I'm really spotty on DA.

Aliuh In reply to MercuryBitt632 [2015-08-10 21:43:48 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.  I'm not sure how to do that.  I'll think on it and let you know if I find method that works.
You're welcome.

I thought I'd try and took apart an umbrella... only to discover it's the wrong sort. This tutorial needs a short/collapsible one, just in case I'm not the only one that didn't get it.

No worries, though! Just restart

what type of fabric? what would work best?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aliuh In reply to Spacesmarts [2015-02-09 04:02:36 +0000 UTC]

The fabric that I used was from a very stretchy skirt.   I don't know what kind of fabric it was, but anything stretchy I think would be fine.

How did you attach your wings to yourself/ costume?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Aliuh In reply to MayRunningBear [2015-01-14 14:24:41 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.  I never actually attached them to anything. I would try drilling a hole in the shoulder end of the arm and thread something through it.
