maybe you need larger nostrils to breathe. then you could have the line where the nostrils rise. the face could rise slightly then the eyes could be raised. you might need a larger cin as well.
or you could raise the whole face slightly.

help? oh go I'm no good at his, I'm struggling with my own all the time x3
I wouldn't lift the eye as you did in the lower right picture, I don't know why, but the one in which you didn't just appeals to me more ^^
plus I really like the nose 'ridges' (those lines, awk can't say in proper english) on the topmost version, that version is my favorite too ^^
I really like how this design is now, those are really original horns, how they gro out of the skin but I agree with bluz too, there's always the possibility of two artist haveing some kindof species that look alike so maybe you ougta consider not to change your current dragons at all? (I don't know what those looked like though
)
anyhoo, really like this design and can't think of anything that HAS to be inthere, I don't like dragons too crammed with loads of 'accesiories' x3
hope that helps in any way ^^

hmm-I really like the the grey-toned one at the top with the slight dish in his face- it just seems to show more character but if you want a more dinosuar look go with the curved nose
your art block is still amazing 0.0

I couldn't think of anything to say on this for along time oO so I didn't ^^'
BUUUUUT I like the nose horn suggestion..I think that would look wicked. I like the expressions on your critters faces and the new one seems kinda..cold?
As for colors...that I'm not sure you wanted help with but I'll throw in my two cents anyway..I always picture your dragons as kinda..shiney..almost metalic..but not really. This character would look neat in copper XD
I'm not sure if that helped..actually I'm sure it didn't

Oooo copper... I never thought of that! I've always loved copper and bronze dragons, but it never occured to make the brown shiny and so achieve copperness XD Good idea!
And she looks unhappy because I wasn't happy with her face XD I've tweaked a few things and I might update it with an added section to this image. I elongated the main horn and the mouth and she looks absolutely different. Well, you'll see And then you can help with sugestions for other things on I need help with.

I love the way you make the eyes. They are more expressive than most dragons I see.
I've left this uncommented for a long time. I tried to write something to help and critique, but my English is lame, so I can't x_x But I just nedded to say this is amazing

sorry oli but i have to say that i like the first option considerably better. what can i say the dragan is incedibly your style, you make everything happy i could'nt have you make somthing mean looking like in the other options. as simply as i can put it: it's your style period. if any other artists have a problem with it they can go outside and play hide-and-go-fuck-yourself.

First I have to say that this is ridiculous that you have to force your hand to change an image. If I draw a tiger and another person draws a tiger, wouldn't we have to expect them to look similar to a degree. A tiger looks a certain way. Especially if you are doing realism art (trying to match nature). Dragons are also going to have similarities that we cannot avoid. A certain look will be in every one in order to follow what is accepted as the "norm" for dragon art.
With that said, I like that you capture a dinosaur physique in your dragons. I see many artists who do that because it would make sense if you want to make these creatures look realistic. I like it. Your dragons tend to have more intelligence in their expression than most. A sort of personality that shines through their faces. The colors you use are very magical. I love that and I see it exclusively in your art. I could pick your pieces out of any group easy.
So yea, you could elongate the nose but that is even more common in dragon art. It would give a wilder look to the animals and also a more mythical. You can see the difference in the linearts you have here. Once has almost a human quality whereas the other definately represents something more animalistic.
As for what you can change, well do what you must but don't lose what you love about art trying to appease overly sensative artists (or their obviously very loyal fans). If you change your style, do it because you want to expand and challenge yourself. Do it because you want to improve it. And those kind of changes I wouldn't have a clue how to suggest, you kind of find them on your own you know.

Actually using a tiger is a very good example of why two art pieces shouldn't look too much alike. A tiger's stripes are like human fingerprints. If they have the same stripe pattern, then the two artists either used the same ref, or one is copying the other.

Personally I think you need to lengthen the face a little but that's just me.. Also, a bit of a dip would also be nice. Not much of one of course, but it would honestly make it look a bit better to tell you the truth. Or you could always go the other way and make the curve more raised. =/ Hmm... Sorry that I'm not of much help...
Good luck!

You're the first person to suggest lengthening the face, and I think you might be right. And I probably will make some kind of a dip, make her face more cuvy and so more interesting.
Thank you! (: All comments do help

It's not that her face isn't already interesting enough it's just that aesthetically it's too... Hmm.. I don't know the word for it.. But the straightness of the face currently conflicts with the rest of the body... It just looks out of place. I hope this helps!

I know what you mean, and I think that might actually be what bothers me. These so much curvature every where else and sudenly her face is flat and straight.
It does help, thank you

If I had the time I would play around with it, but, I do have the time to try and give a good opinion. I like the sketch on the bottom far right the best, but I understand there seems to be something off for you with it. I think it's because there seems to be a lot of space between the details of the scales around the eye and such and then to the mouth and nostril. Perhaps, with the coloring, you could add some sort of detail in that space? (My initial idea would be a simple stripe of some sort just across the top of the muzzle in the same pale color as around the eye.)
Good luck!

I was going to play around with markings, but you could be right - I didn't think of just drawing more detail, and that might work. I've decided I'll probably create some sort of curve on her nasal arch, because right now she looks like a battering ram that could bring down a door with her face XD I'll play around with everyone's ideas. So thank you!

I'd take the mouth shape of the right lower figures, and maybe flare a little their nostrils. Personally, I'd keep the front head shape like that on the top, because I like that kind of shape.

The horns are good, yes. And I'd also think that a horn on the nose... or maybe long whiskers like a catfish or Chinese dragon? Or teeth... but something to break up the mouth, it looks too... ordinary to fit the rest of the face.
I like the eye raised a bit, it gives her more of a benevolent expression, somehow, more intelligent and understanding.
I don't think the muzzle/forehead should be one straight line like that, whether you break it up with a dip or a horn or something, is up to you though.

Alkahla In reply to Ryua [2006-12-23 14:26:06 +0000 UTC]
I was considering that too, so I was looking into what I might be able to slap onto that muzzle to make it more interesting
I actually like the straight face but it doesn't make me completely happy, so I probably will dip it a little near the eyes maybe and work with it a little.
Thank you for the comments! They really do help me make up my mind with these things.

Well if your going for the whole bear/omnivore theme thing maybe make the face shape more concave - it will look a bit like a mammal though, but that will make it more unique I suppose. I love the horns - don't change them!
Perhaps add a horn on the face/nose area (woo! a rhino-dragon!) or maybe a gold mask/shield of some sort...?
I think the nostril looks alot better in the second picture compared to the original.
And moving the eye actually did make a difference - it makes the dragon look older / more masculine (weird I know)
I hope that helped with anything n-n
