Its a small-bodied horse compared to a Clydesdale or Perchiron (sic).Β If the breed is from that region of Germany, they probably did have that much land to till, as England,Β France, or the U.S.Β Thus they didn't need a horse that big.Β

I'm not sure how it's called but it definitely has very small population among that breed

I guess the morphology depends a lot on the work the horse has to do and on the field. That German breed seems to have some French/Belgian horse blood (Comtois and Ardennais). Those breeds are smaller, but they need to be strong to be able to work in the mountains and on steep terrains. I don't know much about the Clydesdale, but the Percheron is from the Perche in Normandie where there're only hills... So more field, bigger horses.

They were also used to drag wood logs out of the forests, which is another reason not to breed them too big. Smaller horses are easier to maneuver and their heads don't hit the branches repeatedly.

According to his brand and the info on his owner's website he's a Pfalz-Ardenner. I actually don't know if there is a english version of this name, they are't very widespread, but rather a local breed based in Rhineland-Palatinate (south-west Germany). But they are indeed a very beautiful breed that should be known to more people!

You're welcome! Yes, sadly they only got a german Wikipedia page, as they aren't very well known elsewhere. On this website you can find a gallery with some photographs of recent and historical horses of this breed: www.pferdezucht-rps.de/rassen/β¦
