Description
Those of you who were at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live recently have seen this painting but it's probably new to the rest of you. It depicts Tennyson's version of the Arthurian tale of "Merlin and Vivien" in which Vivien seduces Merlin to gain a magic charm. Merlin, though obviously very wise, eventually succumbs to her advances and she entraps him within the crevice of a large oak tree... speaks to the power women wield I guess.The painting is oil on panel, measures 52" x 26", and was lucky enough to be selected for inclusion in the upcoming Spectrum 19.

Yeah, Merlin practically raised Arthur. He was more of a father to him more than Uther was.

To be honest, when I read the book of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, I was devastated and heartbroken at what Vivien did to Merlin, doing what she did only as an evil plot against King Arthur by dealing with Merlin first which I hated her for, wanting nothing more than his powers and regrets nothing. Worse is she never got any comeuppance for her evil ways.
But that's just me. And I still say this is impressive to look at.

I heard he escapes from his prison after the tree was cut down a long time ago.

I like this version, though I would imagine her sitting by his feet, almost on his lap.
I thought she killed him with the charm, or made him lay as dead.
I really can't understand why he tells her the charm. I mean; he had to know what was coming. I'm reading Idylls of the King now actually^^
