Adam and I actually work really differently- Adam stars light and builds up to his darkest value. I start with my darkest shadows, and then work towards the light. I say be experimental, see what YOU like best, and just draw a lot!

How did you get the Copics to do that BG?
That's cool.

i colored the whole back ground, traditional style. It streaked a little bit- not much but enough that I found it distracting. So I thought I'd drip the ink right on it, the way Adam does, and just smooth it around. DISASTER! It didn't smooth- it left these awful blobs and streaks. I use very different paper from Adam, and Adam doesn't use color ink. I didn't take that into consideration. So once I pulled myself off the floor, and listened to a pep talk from Adam, I went back into the background with the marker just trying to darken some areas and make the background more of an intentional mess than an accidental one. I had thought I'd go back over it with some color pencil, and create mist rising. But I got to this point and decided I REALLY liked it, so I stopped.

You do work well together. Some artist couples work in styles and media that make colabs impracticable. Allison, do you use UV sheets over your Copic pieces, or do they go to press so quickly that fading isn't a hazard?

I've never had any kind of issue with Copics fading, not it the nearly 8 years Adam or I have been using them. They're archival, so they aren't going to change color, and provided you don't put them in a sunny place (which you shouldn't do with any artwork regardless of what you used to make it) they aren't going to fade.

I've been using markers since 1970, and Copics for about 12 years. I love them. I have found after time that some clients have been known to do exactly what they shouldn't: put the art in a sunny place. So, to protect the artwork, I use the UV shields over originals at art con shows. Here, finished work is stored matted, in flat-files.
