At last, I’m able to show this piece off! This is my contribution to the Gamera the Great fanzine!

I think it’s fairly straight-forward, that I celebrated the Titanic Terrapin’s legacy with this tribute to his Showa-era days. But there is a fun detail that may not be readily apparent: how I did the monsters' eyes in this piece.

Besides Gamera himself, all the monsters lack a gleam in their pupils. Having the pupils be solid black gave the monsters a blunt gaze, which I felt added a certain malevolence to their expressions (as they are the villains, of course). Most monsters are borne of our own folly, with only ourselves to blame for their rampages. But Gamera's rogues' gallery tend to have conceited motivations, using our mishaps to justify their actions, opposed to punishing our hubris.

It's not so much that removing a gleam gave their eyes a lack of expression, it's that there's no kindness in them.

That's why Gamera is unanimously hailed the hero.
