Description "Even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a young boy's shoulders to let him know that the world hadn't ended." -Batman to Commissioner Gordan in the Dark Knight Rises

Detective Travis Nie (First appearance New 52 Nightwing #10) notices the first snowfall in Gotham, and looks over to see a kid with a bloody broken nose in a skin tight suit.

Travis doesn't like the vigilante, but he's not gonna let the kid freeze to death, so he puts his coat on Nightwing.

Nightwing looks at him and smiles."Suit is insulated."

Travis made a fool of himself, and Dick appreciates that.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well...cept that Nightwing isn't a young boy, but I just wanted to do some parallel comparisons. Long post ahead!

Oh boy...where to start on this picture? haha, it must be pretty crazy to see someone draw this in the first place.

Okies, I have all these weird headcanons in my head that I'm pretty sure that not very many people get or really care for. ... And I spend so much time on these pictures that I know won't get too popular too. I'm actually pretty embarrassed bout this one though.

So the blond is a man named Travis Nie, who first appeared in Nightwing #10 New 52. Yeah, if anyone has been reading the New 52 Nightwing maaaaaaybe you'll recognize him? Anyways, I think he's a pretty interesting character for many reasons:

First, I'm hoping he is like the Commissioner Gordan to Bruce...except for Nightwing. I want Dick and Travis to have a partnership on different sides of the law and become buddies and all that good stuff. It just sounds like fun! Nightwing needs some good supporting characters just like Bruce too.

Second, Detective Nie seems like he doesn't mind breaking the rules. After all, I think he got suspended from the Gotham Police Department because he did something bad. (although there was no proof). He is also a bit hot-headed and stubborn, which I think is kinda funny. Anyways, this can help Nightwing as long as Travis is careful.

Third, he and Nightwing got off to a bad start...(which I also think is funny). They didn't trust each other and accused the other of crimes they didn't commit. At the end of the Nightwing Paragon Arc they redeemed themselves to each other by saving each others butts; however, they have not gotten a chance to really chat or anything since Nightwing left for Chicago...and, well, Forever Evil stuff.

Fourth, god...look at that shirt and tie combo Travis is wearing. That's what Travis wore in Nightwing #12, so I drew it. Reminds me of Disco Nightwing. They would get along in terms of fashion.

Fifth, Travis is gay. His boyfriend was killed in an crime Nightwing was involved with if you don't know (poor guy). I can see Travis developing a love/hate relationship with Nightwing while secretly crushing on him. Seriously, Dick wears a skin tight suit that doesn't really hide anything! How can he not?! I don't think Dick knows that Travis is gay though, soooo I can totally imagine a silly romantic comedy on the side of crime fighting. They don't have to get together though. It just would be an interesting dynamic to see.

(Secretly, I like pairing Travis up with Nightwing.)

Anyways, what I'm saying is Travis Nie is an interesting character I want to see more of. Kyle Higgins is doing a pretty good job of introducing new and interesting characters. I'm sad because of all the crossovers Nightwing has, that Higgins doesn't seem to get a chance to completely tell the stories for the characters he creates. Anyways, I hope Nightwing goes back to Gotham and meets up with this semi-corrupt detective at some point in the future.

Oh also, the whole coat idea had made some significant reappearance in Batman #26. What a coincidence!

Phew...anyways, hope you guys like it. Please chat or comment with me about this piece. I'm kinda curious why you like this piece, so please tell me. I love comments and I worked very hard on it!

I know pic is horribly stiff as usual. I think some proportions are all whacked too.

And if this inspires anyone to write some fanfic...let me know. I would be very very surprised.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: Okies well, Kyle Higgins is not gonna write Nightwing anymore. So much for this idea! Ā

Oh haha. Are you trying to get into Nightwing new 52?

The Nightwing Paragon story arc was not too interesting but I liked to use my imagination to make it better.

Vampirehunterneko [2013-12-14 09:18:29 +0000 UTC]

Though I still have to read the Nightwing comics I agree with this canon Ā

It's nice to see characters like Travis interacting with Dick and I think it would be very interesting to let them have a love/hate relationship with some funny misunderstandings.Ā

(I'm secretly very glad that I'm getting into DC comics AFTER their reboot XD Now I can calmly read both old and new and compare them without blowing a fuse)Ā

As for the art, yeah it's a tad bit stiff. Do you use posereferences? It trends to work for me I really do like the atmosphere and colouring though

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

AlphaLunatic In reply to Vampirehunterneko [2013-12-14 17:47:34 +0000 UTC]

I don't use pose references. I draw from imagination so it can be hard for me to know if its right, haha. That's why it's probably so stiff. I tend to draw what I think looks right over and over again and sacrifice fluidity for it.

Only reference I use is for detail like clothes, color palettes, and background.

Haha, good thing you are reading after reboot! Actually I DO remember you blowing a fuse about DMC.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Vampirehunterneko In reply to AlphaLunatic [2013-12-14 23:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Ok well you should do whatever suits you best It helped me with drawing the characters more dynamic in certain poses(though I usually prefer using my imagination, as well)

Haha god I was pretty mad back then, wasn't I? It turned out to be pretty neat in the end. In my defense, however, I was mostly mad about the way they depicted Dante. Especially because they made him smoke(despite the pre-reboot stating he absolutely hated it(in the novels)) It can't stand it when people ignore a characters principles in both fanfic and professional work. They did make a lot of changes to Dante after the release of the teasertrailer, though. Also, I do admit I got swept up in the rage of the mass. So not all of it was genuine. :S
I actually think that the 52(for Jason at least) is not bad at all. He still has the essential backstory elements that made him who is and as far as I know he didn't change too much personality-wise. In fact, after all the shit he's gone through in previous comics I'm glad/relieved to see he's finally (sort of) found his place with the outlaws. I know too little about Roy Harper and Starfire to rage about them. As for the fanservice surrounding Starfire.. Yeah sorry, read to many manga and been on DA for too long to be the slightest bit offend.

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

AlphaLunatic In reply to Vampirehunterneko [2013-12-15 01:52:31 +0000 UTC]

Wait, I do use some pose references. Like for legs and arm sometimes. this time I didn't use any pose references.

For DmC I was cool with it. Then again not much gets me too upset nowadays, haha. I just saw it as the reason why Dante hated that stuff in the first place. Like maybe he had a bad experience with it or something. I get why people were upset though.

True. I think for Jason he didn't really have a place before the New 52, so the reboot wasn't as bad. I think for Nightwing fans, they got really upset because 1) he's red instead of blue 2) he was never in the Teen Titans, 3) He became robin at an older age.

Honestly I there like some small hints of a previous group that Nightwing and Roy Harper was in..soooo I don't believe the old Teen Titans are completely gone...I just think they're waiting for a good story and writer to bring it back haha.

I think people might be raging at Starfire cause of the Teen Titans cartoon, where she was not that skimpy wearing sweetheart....There's so many versions of comics characters (like TV shows, movies, and comics)...that when one version doesn't match up with another version people get mad. =0 honestly I dunno enough about her either though.

How are you enjoying the comics so far?Ā

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Vampirehunterneko In reply to AlphaLunatic [2013-12-15 10:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Ooh ok x)

Yeah true. That's what I figured eventually.

I get why people miss the blue. He was one of the few to wear the colour in the batman universe as far as I know. And so many characters wear red. Personally, I like the blue better.Ā

And seeing how many people loved the old Teen Titans I can understand why they're so upset xDĀ

And I barely view Roy Harper in RHATO and Speedy as the same person. Dunno, they're just so different xD I know in RHATO he's older and went through a lot, but still. Like them both though

Yeah I've seen a few clips of the teen titans cartoon and she is a lot different from the new 52 starfire. However, that was a children's cartoon and the comics are a bit more adult, so it's sort of obvious the writers would make her more adult as well. And also, sex sells. DC needs money to keep making more comics and that's just one of the quickest ways to get it. And since there's so much pirating and financial trouble going on I can't really blame them that much.Ā

Also I heard many people are angry because she now has a relationship with Roy instead of Nightwing, but the reason they(kinda) give is a fairly logical one and you don't know how things are gonna turn out. I like both pairings though I'd like to see Nightwing become a daddy when Nightstar is born :3

I really like the comics so far! I've read Red Hood and the Outlaws and I plan on reading Nightwing, Batman and Robin and Young justice(or teen titans? Dunno the one with Timmy ) I'm just sad that Jay got his memories wiped :C he left the outlaws because he didn't want to be a murderer( next thing he does is join a league of assassins. What the hell DC?) I finished Batman the Animated series and watched Batman beyond: return of the Joker(poor Timmy :C) Next up will probably be Under the Red Hood and the Teen Titans cartoon right now I'm in the middle of exams, but after Xmas I'm gonna pick up DC again. What about you? What are you watching/reading these days?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

AlphaLunatic In reply to Vampirehunterneko [2013-12-16 04:34:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I get the blue. It was a really nice color. Although from a color theory standpoint it's easier for me to use blues in the background when he's red haha. I don't think that a color change in the character is enough to warrant a refusal to read the series though. Sometimes I wonder if I colored Nightwing blue instead of red my art would be more popular. Ā  So many people tell me they really hate the red.

haha, sex doesn't really sell as well as people think. I think that's an old cliched belief that people like to say nowadays without doing real studies on what audiences really wants.

Ā I think people forget that she comes form a sexually open culture though.

RHATHO and Teen Titans are both comics I don't really care for, so you can tell me all about them.

Right now I read Forever Evil (which is really just another Justice League story), Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Nightwing, Batman, Talon (though it's going to be canceled soon), and Saga. I'm till trying to catch up on Walking dead comics and I've been wanting to finish 100 bullets too. I picked up Daredevil as well.

Generally, they are all really good and I recommend them all. Nightwing is probably the only guilty pleasure though. His comic is not that great, but it's not that bad either. It's mostly just kinda fun, Nightwing tends to have so many crossovers though because he is an important character in the DC Universe that the writer for Nightwing always gets sideline from his own story to tie into crossovers. Talon was good in the beginning, but then it became okay later. I think the problem for Talon was the the idea was interesting, but the writer didn't plan the story far enough ahead to keep it going.

Uhm...I've been watching it's Always Sunny in Philedelphia. I have developed a guilty pleasure for black and white movies of all kinds from romance, mystery,Ā  and courtroom drama. And I also enjoy watching romantic English era/high society/Victorian movies haha.

Not a bad idea; I found Travis pretty interesting when I read his bits in Nightwing and agreed, he would've made a cool addition to Nightwing's supporting cast since he could use a cop buddy.

Sweet! I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks so. I thought no one would know who Travis is, so I wrote an extra long description of him haha.

I see you've been watching Arrow. I only watched the first season on Netflix. It was pretty good. How is the second season? I'm too lazy to tune into channels nowadays to watch episodes.

Yeah, I read it, it helped me remember the character since its been so long since he popped up.

Yes I have, and yeah, the second season is awesome. Like, its given me so many nerdy squeals of joy watching it, more than the previous season. They've introduced Barry Allen, superpowers, and Solomon friggin' Grundy; not to mention Deadshot's made an awesome return including alluding to HIVE, Amanda Waller's appeared and revealed that the government are VERY well aware of what Ollie is doing (but, apparently don't care, unless he's useful to them), and the Island bits have gotten WAY more emotional.

I'd recommend it.

Assuming he survived Forever Evil (though, I'm not following that so I don't know what his chances are, I just know he's had his identity exposed and he's been beaten a bit), then its very likely, though if he does, he's probably going to be laying low.

Oh cool! uhm..honestly, I only have like an epilogue which is completely unnecessary and one chapter. Plus I have to explain some stuff. I wrote it kinda a ways back. Anyways takes place before Death of the Family and after the Paragon. It's okay though if you don't know what I'm talking about it's not too important I think. It's also like the first draft and I like stopped when I couldn't connect things as well lol. I have a second draft too, but it's a lot more incomplete. Anyway feel free to give it a read. It contains some strong language, mature stuff. No sexy stuff (not sure if I would..so at least not yet). Uh...so I think it's alright. Also it's like my first time submitting a fanfic. Usually I just draw, and write short crappy outlines. There's probably grammar and spelling errors as well.

Anyways tell me what you think: sta.sh/027772ituj6p

Enjoy.

Hrm...I wrote this awhile back and now that I look at it, my chapter 2 is still really rough haha. I also want to say that I have a second draft, with a different set of events but kinda same story. The problem with writing a real story is sometimes there are plot hole lol.

Anyways, not sure if I have a next part ready.

Anyways, what do you think? How do you feel about the characters. Was the writing hard to understand? Was it engaging or too fast? etc. I know you write right? You can give me some tips or something.

That's good.

Personally, I don't like the death/angst stories people tend to write. It tends to be very cliche, over melodramatic, and often lacks story in favor of sad emotions and depression. I often avoid those.

Sometimes they can be done well, but most of the time I can tell its a teenager's story trying to get their fix on angst and death.

But if you have fun with it, it's totally cool. Don't let my thoughts get you down or anything.
